Japan Box Office Ranking (Week of April 11-12)

Hello AramaJapan readers! We’re starting a new feature, reporting on the weekly box office ranking in Japan this week. You can take a look at this to see the current movie trends in Japan as well as look into what foreign films hits or miss the domestic market. The weekly box office ranking in Japan records the weekend admission and ticket sales. New movies mostly open on a Saturday (sometimes Fridays).

New movies opening last weekend are Solomon’s Perjury 2 and Birdman. Check out the box office ranking below.

Solomon’s Perjury 2 (Solomon no Gisho Kohen) opens one month after the first movie part (Solomon’s Perjury/Solomon no Gisho Zenpen) and ranked number 1 this weekend. The movie mobilized 124,275 audience (314 screens) on its 2-day opening, earning 162 million Yen (1.358M USD). The turnout saw a 35.1% increase from the first movie which opened at no. 3 and earned 120 million Yen (992K USD).

Assassination Classroom ranks second. A new semester has begun as spring break has ended, and the movie is still going strong among its young audience, topping 2.3 billion Yen ($20M USD) and mobilizing a total of 2,090,676 audience on its fourth week.

Third is Doraemon: Nobita no Space Heroes, which is last week’s no. 1. The movie hits 3.68 billion yen ($30M USD), exceeding last year’s Doraemon: New Nobita’s Great Demon—Peko and the Exploration Party of Five’s 3.58 billion Yen, earned at the same period.

April Fools ranked 4th with a 12-day mobilization of 441,994 people, earning 566 million yen. Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb is soon to reach 1.5 billion yen.

Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance), an Academy Award winning film, mobilized a total of 59,785 audience earning 81M Yen (678,215 USD). It missed the 100 million yen mark. There is the feeling that it was released too long since it won at the Academy Awards. It is expected to reach 600M Yen.

Into the Woods and Strobe Edge has topped two billion Yen.

Big movies opening this weekend are Dragon Ball Z: Fukkatsu no F, Detective Conan: Goka no Himawari, Crayon Shin-chan: Ora no Hikkoshi Monogatari ~Saboten Daishugeki, and Fast & Furious 7.
