Oricon 2014 Half-Yearly Music Ranking Monopolized by AKB48

Oricon has released album and single rankings for the first half of 2014.

It’s no surprise that idols are dominating the single charts due to their clever marketing, giving special incentives like handshake events or voting tickets with their CDs. AKB48 has managed to dominate all three top spots so far this year, a first in the chart’s 46 year history. They also managed to simultaneously hold the top album spot, the first time since Utada Hikaru’s single “Can You Keep a Secret?” and album “Distance” in 2001.

It’s unclear whether AKB48 has any more records left to break.
