Last week, Yuko Takeuchi passed away in an apparent suicide. Her death is one in a string of celebrity suicides this year, including Hana Kimura and Haruma Miura.

The New York Times’ Tokyo bureau reporters Motoko Rich and Hikari Hida recently wrote about these deaths and attempt to explain why they are part of a larger suicide trend in Japan. After a decade of decline, Japanese authorities reported a nearly 16% increase in suicides this August compared to last August. Among teenage girls and women in their 20s and 30s, this increase jumps to 74%.

The coronavirus pandemic could be a culprit, as could Japanese culture itself, which may have saved Japan from having a COVID catastrophe, ironically.

It has been announced that Johnny’s Jr. group Space Six will be disbanding over a gambling scandal involving member Ryota Yamamoto.

Back at the beginning of October 2020 gossip websites began reporting that Yamamoto had been visiting unlicensed pachinko parlors, this is considered to be a gambling crime in Japan which is an extremely serious offense. Yamamoto was caught by the famed tabloid Bunshun walking out of one of the parlors with a wad of cash in his hand.

Charges for illegal gambling can yield fines upwards of ¥500,000 yen, with more serious charges having a max of 3 years in prison. Yamamoto’s contract with Johnny’s was immediately canceled following the confirmation of the news.

Top actress Suzu Hirose has tested positive for COVID-19, the announcement was made by her agency Foster.

According to the press release from her agency, Hirose recently underwent mass testing with multiple other people on a project she was currently filming. It hasn’t been revealed if anyone else that participated in the shoot also tested positive.

This week, V6 topped the Combined Single chart with their new single “It’s my life / PINEAPPLE”, with 106,755 points in its first week.

BTS topped the Streaming chart with their digital single “Dynamite”, with 7,875,405 streams in its sixth week, topping the chart for the third non-consecutive week.
