Spotify, which is used by over 320 million users worldwide, has released its rankings for the most played Japanese artists and songs overseas. These charts cover the period from 1/1/20 – 11/27/20.
LiSA tops the artist chart as well as the song chart, with her song “Gurenge.”
These charts lean heavy towards anime music, with eight of the top 10 songs being related to anime. For example, Hayashi Yuuki, who has made songs for the animes “Boku no Hero Academia” and “Haikyu!!”, was the #5 artist. His main Spotify audience is actually in the US, not Japan. His American streams are five times higher than his Japanese ones.
The foreign countries that listened to Japanese music the most this year were the United States, Indonesia, and The Philippines, in that order.

On December 4, Fujii Kaze will release his new digital EP, “Hedemo Ne-Yo EP.” The four song release is centered on his digital single “Hedemo Ne-Yo”, which he released on October 30, the day after he premiered the song at his first Budokan concert, “Fujii Kaze “NAN-NAN SHOW 2020″ HELP EVER HURT NEVER.”
Today, Kaze released the music video for “Hedemo Ne-Yo.” The video is a chaotic affair, which sees Kaze presenting multiple sides of himself, and doing battle with them. Check it out below, along with a video of him performing the song at Budokan!

NiziU received some love from Perfume on TikTok today! Perfume did a dance cover of NiziU’s debut single, “Step and a step”, which came out this week. Perfume’s A-chan recently appeared on the NHK show “Numa ni Hamatte Kiite Mita”, where NiziU also a guest. They also performed together.
Now A-chan has joined her fellow Perfume members to perform the “rabbit dance” that is featured in the choreography for “Step and a step.” Check it out below!
The year is coming to a close, so the end of the year charts and rankings are upon us! Billboard Japan has now released its year end charts for 2020, measuring the period from 11/25/19 – 11/22/20.
Official HIGE DANdism was named Top Artist of the year. YOASOBI‘s “Yoru ni Kakeru” topped the year end Hot 100 single chart. Yonezu Kenshi‘s “STRAY SHEEP” topped the year end Hot Albums chart.
YOASOBI’s “Yoru ni Kakeru” also topped the year end Streaming Songs chart. LiSA‘s “Gurenge” topped the year end Download Songs chart. Kenshi’s “STRAY SHEEP” also topped the year end Download Albums chart.
Official HIGE DANdism’s Fujiwara Satoshi topped the Top Lyricists and Top Composers charts for his work with his band.
On December 2, Shirota Yu will release his new cover album, “Mariage.” This album comes two years and two months after his previous cover album “a singer”, composed of songs from musicals.
“Mariage” sees Yu covering the likes of Utada Hikaru, Official HIGE DANdism, Ken Hirai, Kaela Kimura, and GLAY. The album also features a new song, “Mariage ~Kimi ni Okuru Uta~”, which was written and co-composed by Yu.

On December 2, Mukai Taichi will release his new digital single, “Get Loud.” The song serves as the CM song for EDWIN’s “Jerseys” jeans line. “Get Loud” was co-written with CELSIOR COUPE, who also produced it. The lyrics for the song were written for the Nukumi Meru-fronted commercial, emphasizing the freedom one feels while wearing the jeans.
The music video for “Get Loud” reflects this theme of freedom, featuring Taichi in the open outdoors, wearing an outfit he styled with EDWIN’s “Jerseys” jeans. Check it out below, along the CM and its making, which features Taichi!
