Kimura Takuya, Beat Takeshi and Hugh Jackman for “ReBORN” CM

SMAP’s Kimura Takuya, Beat Takeshi, and Hugh Jackman star in Toyota “ReBORN” latest taiga series CM. The CM started airing December 18.

The original setting from the Warring States period shifts to modern Japan setting. Kimura plays Nobunaga Oda while Beat Takeshi is dressed as Hideyoshi Toyotomi. While riding the ship, thinking of their ambitions and future visions for Japan, a mysterious sailor suddenly appeared. Hugh Jackman plays Marco Polo, the identity behind the mysterious sailor.

The story shows the meeting of the reincarnation of these historical figures, then traveling to enjoy the drive in “ReBORN”. Check out their rare collaboration below.

Teaser Trailer for suspense thriller  “Yokokuhan” starring Ikuta Toma

A teaser trailer for the movie “Yokokuhan” starring Ikuta Toma has been released. The trailer reveals the movie will open on June 6, 2015. Yokokuhan’ is a suspense-thriller depicting terrorism using the internet. It tells the story of a mysterious man who posts his “prophecies” on the internet, which includes the worst type of crimes. Ikuta will play a man named Gates, head of ‘Shinbunshi’ organization. He hides his face, except his eyes, with a mask made of newspaper and punishes those who were freed from police judgement.

At the beginning of the video, the Newspaper Man says, “You’re misunderstanding. I’m not doing this for myself. It’s for all of you. I’ll give you a preview of tomorrow.”

2014 Japan Box Office Top Japanese and Western Films

Bunka Tsushinsha reported on the top 10 Japanese films of 2014, based on estimated box office returns in Japan as of December. This year, Takashi Yamazaki’s directorial films “The Eternal Zero” and “Stand By Me Doraemon” (co-director: Ryuichi Yagi) ranked first and second place. 2014 also marks a very good year for Japanese animation.

On the other hand, Disney scored a mega hit with the monstrous success of “Frozen” raking in 25.47 billion yen, followed by “Maleficent” ranking second. Check out the rest of the list below.

Nothing’s Carved In Stone reveal surprisingly colorful Music Video for “Gravity”

Talented rock band Nothing’s Carved In Stone have just published the PV for their new song “Gravity” to Sony Music Japan’s official Youtube channel.  The video features fog and various colored strobe lights intercut with both footage of the band performing and the silhouette of a beautiful woman.

“Gravity” is the lead track off of the band’s new single set to release on January 14th of the new year, the release also set to include one B-side song and several live recordings from the final performance of their recent “Strangers In Heaven Tour”.  Nothing’s Carved In Stone will also simultaneously release the Live DVD from said tour, titled “No Longer Strangers” on the same day.

Staff Selections:  Winter/Christmas Songs

Hello AramaJapan readers!  This is the first of what might become a kind of seasonal feature, if there’s interest in this type of content.  To explain, a few of us on staff were talking about our favorite Japanese songs to listen to during this time of year and decided that it might be interesting to put together a set of recommendations.  So we’ve each selected 4-5 songs that we feel best represent the Christmas and Winter seasons and given some short blurbs about why we like them.

Of course, we’re also interested in hearing recommendations from all of you, since I think that everyone has a different type of music that they tend to enjoy during this season.  So please, feel free to post whatever songs you like in the comments to share with both us and everyone else who reads the site.

Oricon reveals full Sales Rankings for 2014

Today statistics-tracking company Oricon Inc. has published its end of the year report, which reveals all of the sales data that it’s collected for the year 2014.  This includes the five top earning acts for the year, as well as the yearly single, album, music DVD, and music Blu-ray charts.

This year’s top five selling acts, and their total gross for the year (in yen) are as follows:

  1. Arashi (¥13,823,000,000)
  2. AKB48 (¥13,075,000,000)
  3. Kanjani8 (¥5,862,000,000)
  4. Kis-My-Ft2 (¥5,258,000,000)
  5. Tohoshinki (¥3,691,000,000)

Arashi also managed to top this year’s DVD charts with their “ARASHI Arafes ’13 NATIONAL STADIUM 2013” release, as well as the yearly Blu-ray charts with their “ARASHI Live Tour 2013 ‘LOVE'”.  Meanwhile, AKB48 found themselves atop both the Yearly Singles and the Yearly Album ranking with “Labrador Retriever” and “Tsugi no Ashiato” respectively; this is the first time that the group has achieved such a feat since their inception.
