Open Post

It’s Friday, so it’s Open Post time! Feel free to chat with your fellow readers about whatever you like!

Some Notices for this week:

  • Tomorrow marks this website’s 3rd anniversary, and our 8th year overall! Thank you everyone that has supported this effort! As a throwback to our Mod Posts from our LiveJournal days, I used our iconic Flying Ayu Open Post image.
  • I guess it hasn’t been officially announced outside of comments, but we have opened up the option to submit posts. Additionally, we’ll probably be announcing an open call for writers at some point, which is a great option if you feel like your faves are under represented.
  • People are reporting that comments aren’t loading. This is most likely due to your Ad Blocker of choice, but we’re seeing what we can do about it.

    • Question of the week: What are your thoughts on Arama! Japan as we venture into this new year?

      • can we celebrate…we will love a long, long time

        • Skai

Personally, I prefer the Ballada version.

          https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=YH4RnkpqAJU

          • ngl the ballada version helped me appreciate the song a lot more!

            • Skai

              Same with me!! :)
You can just hear the massive improvement in her voice over time.
Also, the changes in the Ballada version make it sound more like a wedding song, to be honest.
(Ignoring the bad English in the song)

      • FoucaultAnderson

put more interviews like those ex- girl group members.

      • What

Not really thoughts for the new year and I may sound lame or cheesy by saying this but here goes:
Thanks for helping me learn and understand the J-music industry more. I used to be into Jpop as a kid then I drifted out of it, but came back into it again. If it wasn’t for Arama, I’d probably only be listening to Johnny’s, but I’ve discovered so much different artists because of this site. Arama also seems to be the biggest and most active Int’l J-music community online, so I’m happy there’s other people to talk to about J-music (considering idk anyone to talk about it irl) sooooo thanks and keep up the good work lol

      • HyperMoot .

It seems the site is dealing with a wider range of themes and topics. If I got it well, there’s also a new interface in the making, maybe more suitable to the readers needs. Sounds strange coming from me but all the best

      • PigeonPop

The last few weeks have been great–wider scope of material being covered, and some key topics were covered in the guest posts, so kudos to whoever submitted them.

      • FoucaultAnderson

to remind you to have a good night.

        • she’s so sweet tbh

          • FoucaultAnderson

I mean I have pretty shitty nights normally because of insomnia so it is a nice thought!

      • hasawa

Another question in the same vein : why does Koji Uematsu have his goddamn mouth open in every.single.one of his pics??

          signature expression :P

      • circe154

Could it be a bot? It doesn’t look like she’s actually post anything in a long time.

        • I thought that too but if you go back far enough some of them have slight variations, but probably still somewhat automated

      • eplizo

I fucking screamed when I saw this in the other post lol.

    • FoucaultAnderson

Twice made their debut and sold 90K in Japan so far. They also just had their first Music Station release. Thoughts?

Personally, the performance was lackluster and the vocals weren’t good. However, I think the TT pose may catch on since it’s cute. BlackPink are coming up next. Do you think they’ll fair better or worse? They are from YG like Big Bang and IKON.

      • H

I’m actually shocked they’re doing well, but it’s interesting.

Does BLACKPINK have the same kind of push TWICE does in Japan? I doubt it, I haven’t seen idols tweeting and blogging about them or their music.

      • I’m surprised it’s doing as well at it is, but I had a feeling it would do well. Perched for an original single.

I’m not sure if Japan is the right market for BLACKPINK, but I lowkey bop for this pretty 2ne1 rehash. I don’t think YGEX/avex will invest as heavily as Warner is with whoever is doing the advertising for TWICE.

        • FoucaultAnderson

BTS also did amazingly well with their Japanese album I think though they had gimmicks involved but idk if it’s the same for Twice. I haven’t checked to see how many versions or tickets etc. they may have. But definitely they were never going to fail, not with the amount of gori oshi they got.

Still, it’s like when EXO debuted in Japan 2 years ago. They had a big first week and their fans were always bringing them up on arama and fighting with Japanese Music fans on OH, but now you don’t hear much about EXO in Japan anymore.

          • I think Twice’s album comes with a random member trading card, but that’s as far as I’ve seen for “gimmicks”. I saw a post about one going for $350USD on ebay??? Shookening

            • WD79

And lottery tickets for their 2 events. That’s why their sales are going through the same trajectory as BTS. We’ll see after the application date for those events is up.

          • What

Lol omg this whole Twice debut reminds of when Exo debuted, they had the same promotions with billboard posters, tv interviews, twitter announcements etc except Exo got Tokyo Dome instead of Music Station

        • FrozenSoul

TBH, I was not surprised because I expected their album to follow BTS’ trajectory after seeing the high touch lottery tied to the album. http://www.twicejapan.com/news/detail/60

      • Kaido

Twice! Really happy for them. BlackPink will be under Avex too? Avex did good job with IKON so maybe.

        • FoucaultAnderson

If by “good job” you mean bought a rookie award that got them bashed, then maybe?

          • Kaido

I was thinking about their chart performance, so maybe Avex will help BlackPink with their promotions too.

      • Charlie

        Their Japanese is decent.

      • Lolo

It was bad, they can’t perform well, don’t know about BP

        • WD79

Keyakizaka46 performed before them and it was like Chanel vs Walmart, with Keyaki being Chanel.

          • MomoHirai

Too bad Twice is Loui Vuitton.

            • FoucaultAnderson

“Too bad Twice is Loui Vuitton.” If you mean Twice are the cheap, down the block, mis-spelled, knock off version of Louis Vuitton then yes I agree.

              • MomoHirai

Oh shit you got me. That was good tbh.

              • MomoHirai

Thanks for the savagery ~ See you around.

      • hhhh

Unless they have intense bulk-buying incentives, I don’t think they’ll do as well as Twice – whether it’s the Japanese members or just having catchier songs, I’ve seen far more interest in Twice from people in Japan than in Blackpink.

      • Niche’s Commenting Regulars

Feels weird that all the raps are in english.

      • WD79

Yeah performance was lackluster. The actual slayers were Keyakizaka46. Those were fierce!

      • Maknae

YG can keep BLACKPINK to themselves tbh.

      • Worse. It’s like SNSD v. 2NE1.

And Twice is using gimmicks so…

        • Takuno

What gimmicks did TWICE use to sell those 90k. Or did you mean the TT pose as a gimmick?

    • Kaido

      Happy advance 3rd anniversary Arama!

    • surfboardt

Since everyone keeps insisting on talking about Twice, the only acceptable version of TT (NSFW).

    • FoucaultAnderson

If you can be a member of any idol group which one would it be and why. You have to choose one. Doesn’t have to be in Japan.

I can’t choose between SNH48 and Faky, but I’ll say Faky.

      • If we can choose old groups, I would replaced Ai Kago in W after her smoking/old man scandal and we would have gone on to go triple platinum and would be planning our 15 year anniversary in two years by now. Even if in reality it would look like some weird LADYBABY duo.

in reality it wouldn’t work but SOMEONE has to inform the children of kayokyoku classics and 70s J-POP.

        • FoucaultAnderson

I am SO interested in going back and listening to 70s and 80s Japanese music but I just don’t know where to start. I’m really interested in that period of history with the Cold War and American pop music getting huge in the 80s etc and Japanese electronics infiltrating America.

          And this

though this was probably the early 90s

          • hasawa

Man, late 80s/early 90s ads were on another level~
Speaking of game ost remix, I remembered of this song :

            • soup cans

              Ooooo I love game ost

      • SNH48 for me. Angerme is a close second.

    • FoucaultAnderson

Also question: what was your favorite era of japanese music?

      • soup cans

Can it be more than one? 80s and 90s

        • dmitri

can you recommend me some artists or playlists?

          • soup cans

Toshiki kadomatsu, lots of albums to choose on youtube and wada kanako

      • D

        1999-2003

      • What

Early 2000s, thats when i got into jmusic and i constantly find myself going back to listen to those songs

      • K.Y.

        00’s

        • hasawa

          hands down

      • yacchaitai

        80s

        • dmitri

can you recommend me some artists and/or playlists?

          • Curel

This album was produced by Akina Nakamori herself and was also intentionally produced to sound “different” than what was common in J-pop at the time.

            • dmitri

thanks so much! ill definitely add this to my list (-: yea im pretty new myself bc i always find it so hard to find music that really appeals to me and then discover more if i do find one song

          • yacchaitai

idk akina nakamori or google some list or video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DYQ6vCArQ4s

          • HyperMoot .

something I’d take with me on a desert island

      • I don’t really have a favorite era, I think starting with the ’70s every era had a lot of great stuff. And there is a lot of great stuff nowadays as well, so I honestly could not decide about a fave.

      • Historia Lenz

        90s and 00s

    • FoucaultAnderson

      What happened to Maaya Sakamoto????

      • zephyr

I miss Maaya so much ugh. She’s only been doing voice acting (and sometimes stage acting) lately. She’s gonna sing Mikazuki in Dreams Come True cover album iirc but I want her to release a new single already :( Preferably Kanno as a producer. Something for 35th anniversary of Macross series maybe?

    • マイケル・タンザー

I think J-pop SHOULD enter the Overseas market and also, Avex should lift the Export ban as well too!

      • Hajime Crea

But gaijins scare the old Japanese men

      • What export ban? The one everyone was oh-so-scared about and which turned out to be a restriction, that basically affects only a handful of anime titles?

    • What

      Happy Anniversary Arama!
Idk if Arama is gonna post this or not… but does anyone have a translation of this years The Music Day Johnny’s Medley?

    • Skai

      Happy Anniversary AramaJapan!!
A huge thank you and shout out to all the writers and contributors and commenters and everyone else who have made AJ what it is today!!
      THANK YOU!!!

Happy Anniversary Arama! Thank you for providing us Jpop news~

    • FrozenSoul

May be I could spill some receipts once a while with this, http://aramajapan.com/submit/, like the old time.

      And…
      Happy birthday, Arama!

    • eplizo

      Happy Anniversary, y’all!

    • yamakita

Who else is at AX Anisong Matsuri right now?!!

    • Hajime Crea

      Happy 3rd Anniversary Arama!

Does anyone know of any Japanese acts that make nudisco? I’m looking for something like Especia (My favourite songs being the single edit of Boogie Aroma and アバンチュールは銀色に)

    • Excited to see what articles the new submit post option will bring!

      Happy Anniversary Arama!!!!

      • hasawa

Are you still a contributor? I miss your fashion articles… :/
I’d like to take up the torch but J-fashion has been so boring these days…

        • Unfortunately I am no longer a contributor. Life got more busy and time management was needed.

I agree that J-fashion (and fashion in general) is stagnant.

          • Yeah, J-fashion changed a lot during the last few years, and the cancellation of the print versions of Kera and GLB (the last issues of both arrived recently and it was kinda sad to flip thru them, seeing still how damn awesome they are) clearly marked the end of an era, but… Well, I still think it is quite exciting. There are still a lot of great stuff, cool brands, great and unique fashion sense, it is just quite different from what became widely known worldwide as Japanese street fashion, but after all, change and evolution is a natural process.

            • Yeah, I know fashion is changing right now. But it’s just in a really ugly metamorphose stage that I can’t be bothered with. And while in previous collections designers were influenced by the past, current ones are seem like they’re getting in their time machine, kidnapping it, and holding fashion ransom until we pay up. All this nostalgia, athleisure, and whatever the instagram elite /urban outfitters is hocking is torture.

              • Well, I still see a lot of great stuff posted at Tokyo Fashion and I also saw many amazingly creative outfits last year in Tokyo, so I don’t think the situation is that bad at all.

    • HyperMoot .

watch of the week: Pieta in the toilet (2015). I missed that when it came out, surprisingly good. Yojiro Noda from Radwimps is good but the real gem in the film is young Hana Sugisaki who remarkably portrays teen angst. Lily Franky, a Kore Eda regular, is also great as the odd one

    • HyperMoot .

I’m glad Japan is still addicted to CDs. Got my copy of Chihiro Onitsuka’s live Tiny Screams. Double CD + DVD + Booklet + mini-poster in a luxury boxset, superb item. And the music, especially her voice, is great, just fine enough to please the listeners who liked what she did at the time of Insomnia, This Armor and son on. Maybe such a record and her latest album Syndrome were met with little excitement like ‘oh, yet another come-back for the odd ball’ but it’s more than rehab, she’s back on track

      https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/8f950632718985e73827c436f82d2b888b9d42ad99b5b4a1c3839bbf165b4d1d.jpg

      • WD79

Oh I need to listen to this. Loved her during Insomnia time!

        • HyperMoot .

you won’t be disappointed, the version of Borderline gave me goosebumps just like the first time I listened to it.

    • Thomas

Lowkey addicted to BoA’s new song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bKqe9zqMUcI

      • Michele

        That’s an odd single choice.

    • AkaneHaga

is H!P alright in the next 10 years from now?

    • hhhh

After their latest effort charted at #75 with less than 1000 copies sold, do you think that FAKY is an unprofitable venture for Avex? I wonder how long it’ll be before they get put on the same shelf as Ikio Ayaka and mini?

      • What

I don’t follow Faky but how does Avex promote them? I don’t see why they cant build up a fanbase considering they’re kinda similar to E-girls style (western sounding music, good vocals, synchronized dancing) and E-girls are kinda popular

        • Sakura Harano

E-girls’s music still has a J-pop feel, FAKY’s music is similar to what 5H or LM would release. FAKY is having their first concert live in October which is great.

        • E-girls also has LDH behind them. Avex’s acts that aren’t leased are all flops now.

      • I am one of that less than 1000! :D But seriously, as happy as I was to see them have a CD debut at long last (they were supposed to have a CD out about 2 years ago, with the first line up, but that was made digital only after all), I think that they are absolutely the kind of act, that is more popular with young people who do not buy CDs anymore. So, in their case, I think having a CD out was just an extra and what really decides about their future is how their digital sales are.

    • Midna

Got to watch Mumon on Wednesday. The movie is great!! I want to see it again :(

      • I want to be relevant :(

OMG I WANT TO WATCH IT TOO T_T

        • Midna

It was so good!! I can’t believe we got to watch it before it came out in Japan! The director was really funny.

          • Takuno

Omg i got spoiled big time reading the manga T-T.
What did you think of the ending?

            • Midna

:( bittersweet. I wish it ended differently!! But Ohno did a good job. Satomi and Ohno were so cute together.

      • Historia Lenz

        I envy you…

    • HyperMoot .

released yesterday, Haruka to Miyuki’s latest full album (Tameiki no Danmenzu – 溜息の断面図)

      http://harukatomiyuki.net/feature/3rd_album

It’s a good opus, I really love this track (Will, ending note): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mm3efjkSgNc

it’s region blocked but maybe different proxies will do the job (ex: http://proxyjapan.nu/)

    • HoneyDew

Some bloggers who call themselves true supporters of Japanese Entertainment just do bashing of another blog and the comments written over there 😒Hypocrites!!

Visited a blog which venomously ranted about Arama and the comments over here.. Probably out of jealousy … I get it….

      • hasawa

Funnily enough, people who rant and bitch restlessly about Arama are also the most regular visitors/commentators lol

        • HoneyDew

Yes..true.. Arama has maximum number of hits among all the JEnt promoting sites.
This blogger calls himself true supporter of Japanese talents promoting the deserving actors and criticizing overrated actors. But, all I can see is shit talking about Arama(of course through hints) and analyzing comments over here…. Well, better stay the way you describe yourself …

          • Reileen

“This blogger calls himself true supporter of Japanese talents promoting the deserving actors and criticizing overrated actors. But, all I can see is shit talking about Arama”

            Now, I AM CURIOUS

      • eplizo

sounds good. reminds me of her older stuff.

Why are these pricks coming for my girl again?! Srsly there Japanese grannies need to get laid and stop worrying what Kiko is doing!

    • Historia Lenz

Happy anniversary, Arama! Thank you for keeping us updated on J-ent news! More power! :)
