Yesterday, Tyler, the Creator‘s new album, “IGOR”, was revealed to be the #1 album in the US this week. Listeners who are familiar with Japanese music may have heard someone familiar while listening to the album: Yamashita Tatsuro. The full credits for “IGOR” were released today and Yamashita was listed, along with the likes of Kanye West, Pharrell, and Solange.
Yamashita is listed as a lyricist and composer on the song “GONE, GONE / THANK YOU”, due to it featuring interpolations from his song “FRAGILE.” The song is from his 1998 album “COZY” and was used in a commercial for SANYO.
On Monday night, Yamashita appeared on the NHK radio show “Matsuo Kiyoshi no Mellow na Yoru” and talked about the sampling, calling it “sound.”
