The past, present and future of Western anime/manga adaptions

The future

When it was announced that Scarlett Johansson would star as the main character of “Ghost in The Shell”, a lot of fans of the original work argued that this is a case of “white-washing”, since the manga’s protagonist is of Japanese descent.

The same criticism was voiced when “Dragonball Evolution” was released. In the eyes of many, the westernized setting and characters are what made the film so bad.

It is also unclear, which of these films will ever make it out of production. A 2005 announced “Kiseiju” (Parasyte) feature film was never released. Looking at the frequency of updates, some of these projects might just end up getting lost in development as well. It appears that producers are delaying these projects in favor of western franchises that have proved to be commercial successes.

Hollywood has yet to produce a successful animanga adaption and this wave of new releases might actually lead to one. Which of them are you looking forward to most? Be sure to tell us in the comments!
