The movie is directed by Yukihiko Tsutsumi and is based on Kurumi Inui’s novel. The novel intrigues due to the sudden, unexpected turn toward mystery in the last two lines.
The romance mystery movie will be released on May 23, 2015. Check out the plot and teaser trailer below.
In the late 1980s, a job-hunting college student in Shizuoka Prefecture named Suzuki (Matsuda Shota) begins an awkward romance with a dental hygienist named Mayu Maeda Atsuko). However, when Suzuki finds a job he moves to Tokyo and the two are forced into a long-distance relationship. Over time, their relationship starts to fall apart as Suzuki begins spending time with another woman named Miyako (Fumino Kimura).
Set in Shizuoka and Tokyo during the late 1980s, the story is broken into two main parts—“side A” set in Shizuoka and “side B” set in Tokyo—with chapters named for song titles representative of what happens in each of them. The book begins as a youth romance story, but takes a sudden, unexpected turn toward mystery in the last two lines. In fact, many readers feel compelled to re-read the entire book again immediately after finishing it. Those final two lines will reportedly be represented in the final 5 minutes of the movie.
