The results of the annual “Favorite Johnny’s” ranking from Shukan Josei PRIME magazine is in! The number of survey participants has increased every year from 12,000 respondents in 2017, 20,000 in 2018 to 25,000 people for 2019.
The results this time has been particulary interesting, does this signal the rise of the “next generation” in Johnnys?

Yamada Ryosuke, the “ace” of Hey! Say! JUMP made a big jump to no. 1 from the 10th place last year, garnering a lot of votes from women in their 10s and 20s. In addition, Hirano Sho (King & Prince) who ranked outside the Best Ten last year is voted at no.3, while Nakajima Kento (Sexy Zone) and Nakajima Yuto (Hey! Say! JUMP) round the top 10, it’s looking like the “next generation group” is in great shape.
The previous top 2, Kamenashi Kazuya and Yamashita Tomohisa dropped to 2nd and 7th places respectiveley. Similarly, only three Arashi members, Sakurai Sho, Ohno Satoshi and Ninomiya Kazunari, remained in the top ten.
According to an entertainment reporter:
“Arashi is a very popular group that can get a 2 digit rating, so it is urgent for Johnnys to develop a successor. Although every group already has the ability to attract an audience that can fill a dome concert, the general public’s recognition is is still less compared to Arashi. They are advancing into variety aiming for a “crown program” like Arashi. Even Arashi took 10 years to finally breakthrough.”
Johnnys is steadily advancing to give way for the “new generation change”. However, it is still uncertain whether they will grow into national idols like SMAP or Arashi.

Even though he’s glittering as an absolute ace, he’s giving a lot of effort behind the scenes. And his face is a miracle of humanity!
Everything is ikemen, the sweet face, sweet singing voice, his performance that fascinates everyone, and stable talk ability. Yamada Ryosuke can do all these.
Yamada-kun has achieved his current position with his own effort. He is also one of the most admired seniors of many Juniors.
Someone who was born to be an idol. His skin is smooth and beautiful as ever. Ocassionally, his masculine figure is also shown. I want him to be more active as an actor in the future.
2. Kamenashi Kazuya (KAT-TUN) – 2,117 (1)
There are various groups but every time he properly meets the fans. I think there were times when he wanted to cry, but he did not show any tears. He’s strong and kind. I love his attitude as an idol.
He’s a very capable ikemen, that even as an ordinary salaryman he’ll find success.
His visuals of course, but more than that his inside is wonderful. His attitude towards work and relationship with people, working respectfully with staff is admirable.
He’s the best professional idol in the world of entertainment and a very grounded person. If you’re Kamenashi, you’re likely to be successful in any world. I like his strong sense of responsibility.
3, Hirano Sho (King & Prince) – 1,185 (21)
He has a cool and cute side who looks like an airhead but he is very serious with work. I fell in love with his hardworking figure!
The gap between his face and personality. Even though he has such a handsome face, he is a natural airhead. Even so, he cares the most about his surrounding.
At first, I was interested in his “Hana Nochi Hare” drama character. I watched him in variety shows and I think his suprised reaction is cute. His dances well and has good reflexes. Even if he doesn’t have much knowledge on a topic, he can talk honestly.
His performance as Kaguragi Haruto in HanaHare was very good. He is good in singing and dancing and is also very attractive as an idol.
