Thelma Aoyama begins celebrating her 10th year in the industry with “My Only Lover”

It’s been rocky 10 years for Thelma Aoyama. She debuted in September 2007 with “One Day” that barely charted at #98. A year later, together with SoulJa, she landed a monster hit, the song that defined the year of 2008, “Soba ni Iru”. The song’s success won her a Kohaku performance and kept her afloat for a couple of years until she completely fell into oblivion with the rest of the urban wave. Her intensive studies at Sophia University did not help the case either. The last that was seen of Thelma was her “no entrance fee” Christmas performance at Sunshine City in Ikebukoro which gathered so many people for her standards that she allegedly said that “she had expected only two people to come”.

Despite Thelma’s lack of selling power and the fact that most of her releases went unnoticed by general audience, she is still willing to commemorate her years of endeavors as an rnb diva by releasing a series of singles in 2017, starting with “My Only Lover”. In order to promote it she teamed up with the French company “Guerlain” that happens to celebrate the 30th year of its renowned powder, “Meteorites”. The single is scheduled to be released though LINE and Recochoku on January 18 and it will become available on other platforms on February 2. See the single cover and the promo video below.

      cute song!

Why can’t you mods just do a modest report without being so damn snarky? Literally telling her Happy Anniversary and providing the information for her new single would have worked. Not only that, she has been much active every single year since her debut so idk why you couldn’t be like a real damn “journalist” and fact check your “report” on activity in the industry, you incompetent clown. But yeah let’s take one performance where she sarcastically made a joke and run with it because you’re skills are that of an assistant editor of a high school yearbook.

      • HyperMoot .

She’s a public figure so she’s open to attacks. This applies to everyone, correct? Mods and contributors are not -open site, open comments, 50,000+ readers, no moderation but they’re not-, so you shouldn’t use insults like “you incompetent clown”, even if that sounds gentler that other terms used against other contributors. But, yes there’s a but (not necessarily hurt), your opinion counts and has the same weight/impact/clout as the contributors’, that’s another oddity derived from the representative democracy illusion, readers and ordinary fans/media personnel are equal ! Google proves it wrong but Google is a dumb-ass that knows jack shit. The icing on the cake is that being a girl Thelma is probably more likely to be laughed at and possibly called a bitch when some troll wakes up somewhere, ain’t that cute and lovely?

Anyway, Besides op being the pulsating pimple on life….

The song is really cute. Thelma looks gorgeous and so does the pv. Despite the industry disrespect towards soloist, particularly urban soloist, I’m so glad she continues to be active and perform. She made it to 10 years and I am so happy for her. I hope we get some type of celebration album this year. 😃😃😃😃😃

      • What industry disrespect? If the public doesn’t want it, it’s not the industry’s fault.

This is a pisspoor, embarrassing article. Shitting on the artist throughout is just in bad form. A significant number of artists feature hear sell just as poorly, and have little of any presence on the Japanese media scene, yet the coverage is totally different.

It’s a modest request. if you’re going to report things and want to be seen as legit, please start showing a little more respect for the artists you’re covering. I’m not saying you can’t criticize, but there is no relevant context that links the criticism of her career and the news this post was meant to introduce.

For this particular article more information about her numerous releases over her 10 years would have better suited the focus.

You don’t read many gossip sites do you? They’re always snarky about things they love.

        • ProllyWild

Is that the official classification of this site? Gossip blog?

          • HyperMoot .
            • ProllyWild

Good to know. See I would assume that a site would manage to keep these things clearly divided. News & gossip. As in some posts are news and some are gossip. I suppose what confuses me is that the article content here is not gossip. It’s not “i heard Aoyama Thelma is releasing an album and it’s yet to be confirmed. Nor is it gossip about about her live shows ” I heard no one comes to her live shows anymore.” It’s structured as a news article presenting news of a release that’s officially announced, but then inserts m irrelevant criticism of her career that people are now defending as snarky toned gossip.

Im sorry, I guess I’m not seeing how this is a solid presentation of news or gossip.

    • It’s a very cute song. I like it.

    • Koushiba

I like this song a lot <3 she looks super cute too!

    • Reileen

I was just going thru my Cpop discography this weekend and digging more of Fish Leong and learned that my fave song of hers “No Ifs” is a Chinese translated version of Thelma’s “Soba ni Iru ne” O_o

I like Arama’s style. Cocky, but lovely and funny :3

    • FOOLISH

if i was only interested in reading factual reports, i’d go to another j-pop news website. i come to arama because i expect to see some personality from the author of the article and perhaps a joke or two thrown around. the way people are blowing this out of proportion and shooting personal attacks is ridiculous and uncalled for.

      • ProllyWild

“the way people are blowing this out of proportion and shooting personal attacks is ridiculous and uncalled for.” lol…

      • HyperMoot .

Shooting personal attacks is indeed wrong, especially when it comes to direct insults. On the other hand, you can’t expect readers not to voice discontent when they’re totally opposed with the contents of a post. It’s no surprise either if they use similar tools, i.e. irony, sarcasm and jokes others might find unpleasant if not a bit rude. Also there’s one law for the rich and one for the poor, some contributors use their position to play the victim but it doesn’t bother them to upvote, encourage and congratulate even the worst trolls when they comment their way.

“she had expected only two people to come”
Bless her for keeping it real.

The song is cute (albeit dated), but it’s a step back from her last two EPs.

    • yamakita

I haven’t missed her one bit.

    • HAHA

Wow, didn’t even need to mention dead mothers, lesbianism, teenage girls or Johnny’s to trigger all you precious folk this time..
