Makoto Shinkai’s “Kimi no Na wa.” grosses over 10 billion yen at the box office

It was announced on September 23 that Makoto Shinkai’s “Kimi no Na wa.” (also known as “your name.”) sold over 7.4 million tickets, grossing over 10 billion yen at the box office.

This makes “Kimi no Na wa.” the first animated movie to reach this milestone that is not produced by Studio Ghibli and the first to do so since 2013’s “The Wind Rises” (Hayao Miyazaki).

Shinkai’s movie hit the silver screen on August 26, receiving positive feedback from both critics and viewers. Some related books including a novelization, side story book and manga were released and promoted alongside the film. These books have sold a total of over 1.8 million copies.

Even the official soundtrack, produced and performed by RADWIMPS turned out to become one of the biggest hits of the year, topping both the Oricon and Recochoku charts for multiple weeks and selling more than 220’000 physical copies.

I believe it is safe to say that “Kimi no Na wa.” and its related projects will continue to fascinate people until the end of the year and beyond.
