Talent Rola is using her very popular social media profiles for something besides selfies.
The Bengali beauty took to her official Instagram account to share a very famous quote by John Fire Lame Deer.
Deer was a “holy man” apart of the Lakota tribe. As a child he was sent to a boarding school run by the U.S government in-order to assimilate Native Americans. Entering into his youth Deer lived a very chaotic life. He worked in the rodeo, and was lead into the dark path of gambling, being a womanizer, and drinking.
Eventually he became more attuned with his roots, and lived the rest of his life as an activist who struggled to help preserve Native American cultures.
Rola shared a quote from “Seeker of Visions“, a memoir written about Deer in 1972. The quote talks about colonizers coming to America and forcing their way of life onto the Native Americans.
“Before our white brothers came to civilize us we had no jails. Therefore we had no criminals. You can’t have criminals without a jail. We had no locks or keys, and so we had no thieves. When someone was so poor that he had no horse, tipi or blanket, he would, in that case, receive it all as a gift.
We were too uncivilized to give great importance to private property. We didn’t know any kind of money and consequently, the value of a human being was not determined by his wealth. We had no written laws laid down, no lawyers, no politicians, therefore we were not able to cheat and swindle one another.
We were really in bad shape before the white men arrived and I don’t know how to explain how we were able to manage without these fundamental things that (so they tell us) are so necessary for a civilized society”
In the caption she translated the message into Japanese, followed by the quote written by herself in English along with the comment “I RESPECT THE LIFESTYLE OF NATIVE AMERICANS PEOPLE“.
Rola’s English version is slightly different, such as the use of the word “delinquents” instead of “criminals”, but the point still comes across.
The plight of Native American people is an issue that tends to be brushed under the rug, and is a topic that many in Japan most likely aren’t too familiar with.
Meanwhile, Rola will be appearing on the cover of the latest issue for the fashion magazine “SWAG HOMME”.
