Earlier this week, Armenia announced that it will bring together six musical artists of Armenian origin together to form their Eurovision 2015 supergroup Genealogy.
The announcement came with a preview video that gave a small hint in the form of a map, highlighting New York, Paris, Addis Ababa, Yerevan, Sydney and Tokyo as the origins of its members. With some investigation by Eurovision news blog Wiwibloggs, they were able to compare those locations with the list of artists published by OGAE Armeni, and for Tokyo, singer Stephanie Topalian fits the bill.
Stephanie Topalian, known professional simply as Stephanie, was born to an Armenian-American father and a Japanese mother who came from Yamaguchi Prefecture and grew up in California. She moved to Tokyo in 2002 and by 2007 at the age of 19, she debuted with her song “Kimi ga Iru Kagiri” when it aired as the ending theme in the second episode of the anime KISS DUM -ENGAGE planet-. She went on to be one of the recipients of the Best New Artist Award at the 49th Japan Record Awards that same year and went on to release two albums.
She has largely been inactive musically as well as on social media since her release of three successive monthly digital singles from February to April of 2012, so an announcement like this is a big deal regardless of the group going far in the competition!
Thanks Adam for the tip!
