#1 Song Review: Week of 4/1 – 4/7

Hello AramaJapan readers and welcome to this week’s installment of #1 Song Review! Last week saw Masaharu Fukuyama come out on top against Kis-My-Ft2. Masaharu is back again this week along with a newcomer and a returnee from weeks past. Find out what various staff members thought of the songs that topped the physical and digital charts this week and share your thoughts on them too!

Oricon #1: SKE48 – Coquettish Juutaichuu (Recochoku #23 / not in the iTunes top 25)

Ronald: Nothing new here really. Another, cheery pop song. But wait! There actually is something a tad different here. There’s a 70s influence here. It’s a bit funk, a bit disco. The song could’ve used more it rather than the same recycled track the 48s pass around. This song hurts my head a bit for some reason. It’s like an audial version of being too sugary and giving a toothache. 3/10

Recochoku #1: whiteeeen – Ai Uta ~since 2007~ (Oricon #43 / iTunes #2)

Ronald: Same review as last week – This is another song that I don’t mind. It’s a GReeeeN cover. I’ve spoken before about my dislike of GReeeeN and all the shouting in their songs. Maybe I would like their songs more if someone else sang them? I can now say that this is true. I would take this over a GReeeN song any day. It has a nice, feel good quality that I surprisingly like. It’s like I can finally get what GReeeeN is trying to convey now that the annoying shouting is out of the picture. Or so I thought… GReeeeN, in all their shouting glory, does make a brief appearance in this cover. Very brief, thankfully. 6 /10

iTunes #1: Masaharu Fukuyama – Nando Demo Hana ga Saku You ni Watashi wo Ikiyou (not released physically / Recochoku #2)

Listen here

Ronald: Now this is a nice song. It’s nothing groundbreaking, it’s nothing all that unique, but it is nice. It’s a well done piece of music. It’s very comforting. Masaharu’s voice is great on this. It’s so rich and emotive. The instrumental to this is interesting. It reminds me a lot of a military march, which actually is a bit unique when you think of it being used in the realm of pop music. There’s an understated grandness to this, if that makes sense. 7.5/10
