    • Still no Little Glee Monster this year? What is this madness.

      • But why would they be there?

    • ???

      Who is PUFFY? Without Ami?
I hope PikoTaro will appear on the kids slot with Elmo, Cookie Monster and Ninotaro.

    • This list is pretty expected. I’m glad Golden Bomber is out, even if it means bringing in RADIO FISH. Everyone knows Ringo is my fave, but what exactly will she do there? And no SMAP is a surprise.

      • surfboardt

Probably a medley or throwback to one of her iconic songs like what everyone else that has no new content does.

        • HyperMoot .

what makes you think she has no new content? been with her lately to know what she’s up to?

          • But there really isn’t a hit this year. What is she going to do? The real versions of the instrumentals that were used in the Olympics?

            • HyperMoot .

maybe or maybe something new? who can tell honestly? She’s famous for being quite unpredictable right? so it might be a little surprise.

              • I just remembered she released “Jiyudom” and it was a NHK theme song. Tokyo Jihen reunion on Kohaku!

        • Historia Lenz

The biggest surprise might a “Nijikan dake no Vacance” performance. Do things like this happen on Kohaku?

          • Possibly…

          • Don

I would like to see this happening but its slim. There are rumors Utada won’t be at the venue on the day itself. She’ll be performing live or pre-recorded in the States. Not something new since MISIA, Lady Gaga and Sayaka Kanda also performed like so.

      • HyperMoot .

“Everyone knows Ringo is my fave” alas, as she’s in the list of my top faves, that’s the toughest part.

      • Don

No SMAP is not a surprise. They’ve confirmed their swan song will be on SmapXSmap.
No back number is a surprise.

        • yamakita

I’m glad they’re not torturing us anymore, which is every time they’re required to sing.

      • Guest

An album that sold more than 350k, and a song that got certified Million digitally. Hard to know why back number weren’t invited… or maybe they are another Mr. Children.

      • yamakita

ARAMA readers got it pretty right! Or is it just that Kohaku is predictable? <_< Is Mr. Children still popular? They're celebrating their 25th anniversary, but I guess that's not good enough to have them back.

        • Ryusenkai

They are – very much so. It’s more that from what I remember (I’d have to dig up the interview to be exactly sure on this) they don’t much like Kohaku, or the idea of music being used to decide any kind of winner or loser. They’re fairly well known for refusing NHK’s invitations, much in the vein of what Namie does (though for their own reasons).

        • You’re right, it’s a mix of the readers being informed and the show being predictable.

    • surfboardt

… Holy shit, Hikki is a huge surprise. I wonder what’s the cause of this sudden change unless it really was a case of them just giving up on inviting her after she declined.

      • Kanjo Maru

“AKB48 is likely going to be representative of all of the 48G groups” is exactly what’s going to happen. They’re doing a vote among all the groups to determine the 48 they’re sending to Kouhaku.

      • dysis

Hikki sang the theme song for the previous asadora, so it’s not that huge of a surprise really…

      • Ahmad Ridwan

akip had stated that nogi and keyaki are two different entities that won’t likely to be mashed up one another.

        • m

Like he said AKB and Nogi are rivals and then put a Nogi girl in AKB?

          • Ahmad Ridwan

he never stated a nogi girl would never become part of akb while ikoma got the double position back in 2014, in fact several nogi girls like shiraishi and ikuta also got the akb offer, but they both declined. so it’s basically he’s justified to do that. but now, several months ago he clearly said “keyaki and nogi have their own path to walk”. I would believe that fat old man lol

    • BAD KID

i’m surprised kinki and puffy have never attended before

and can namie get over herself and appear regularly on tv again

      • mio

namie is smart. she goes on live HD unedited TV people will see her non-photoshopped self. woman is pretty, but she looks her age up close. she’s saving herself the closeup bad screenshot bashing ayu gets and hikki got just last month.

        • starlightshimmers

Namie is smart because she gets to control what the public sees from her, and not only that but she regularly appears in fashion magazines which allows her to reach a broader audience who may not even listen to her music.

          • So nothing that involves actually performing.

        • Ari

I never thought about it like that, that’s smart of her and her team.

    • dysis

      Please don’t let Arashi do the final performance for the White team. It would be an honor but, it would also mean that Arashi’s taking the baton from SMAP, and I don’t want that. I want Arashi to be Arashi, and not be labeled as the next SMAP. ;_;

      • Did that happen a while ago though?

        • ???

They were never the ootori or toori.. I think. I do not recall them being the end performer for their team.

          • I mean being the new SMAP.

            • ???

Being otoori or toori would make it “official”. This has created animosity, not just by smap fans but also by the public who’s tired of Johnny’s. Being all grand and mighty like SMAP is not what Arashi is about.

              • lol

arashi was the last i thinnk few years back..not last year tho

        • dysis

If NHK pushes Arashi to perform last for the white team, then the SMAPโ†’Arashi thing will be official. The Arashi fandom does not need more antis from the SMAP fandom. Ugh.

          • ???

On the other hand, I think Arashi would not turn down the offer if they are being pushed to take it. They’ll take it as a challenge…
Can Kinki Kids be ootori instead?

      • ???

        As much as I love Arashi and have been enjoying Kohaku for years, SAME ;_;

      • Arashi is Arashi already, I don’t understand this fear tbh.

        • dysis

You’re right. I shouldn’t worry about it too much.

        • ???

I don’t like the extra pressure and impossible expectations :/ *isoverprotective*

          • Kanjo Maru

They’re fully grown men and arguably the most popular music group in Japan. I think you can start weening them now.

      • Deep River

        both trash

    • Ara

      No LDH?

      • E-girls and 3JSB are there.

      • ???

What ronald wrote. But no Exile as expected. Not without atsushi

        • yamakita

          Yay, no Exile!

      • Jo

Did you even read the article? E-girls was the third name and Sandaime is on the other team…

    • Kanjo Maru

Interesting to note the surprising drop of Wada Akiko coincides with Utada’s Kouhaku debut.

“KKK46 won’t be there after what happened” well there you go.

As much as I’m glad to see Golden Bomber finally out, I’d still prefer seeing what they have to do with Memeshikute a 5th time than seeing PPAP there once.

      And it’s Yamauchi Keisuke.

      • RADIO FISH is replacing Golden Bomber, not Piko-Taro.

And it’s interesting that Akiko was dropped!

        • Kanjo Maru

Piko-Taro will be there, though. As a special guest but not on the teams.

RADIO FISH is replacing them on Team White but Piko-Taro is the one replacing the cheese.

          • But he’s not actually debuting like RADIO FISH is. Golden Bomber was actually there, not a special feature.

            • Don

Are you writing a special post for PikoTaro as Kohaku special feature? Or will you edit this article and note his appearance?

One more thing, did any of the source announced additional MC? Can’t imagine them dumping everything on Aiba

              • Arimura Kasumi is leading the Red Team.

I’m not seeing where it says he’ll be a special guest besides tabloids. NHK nor the actual news sources have him listened at all.

                • Don

I know about Arimura and she has zilch hosting experience.

Is that so.. I thought it was confirmed.

                  • It was a Nikkan Sports rumor, but I’m not seeing it anywhere today.

              • Taima-kun

Takeda Shinichi is the comprehensive host joining Aiba and Kasumi – all of them being their first time
                http://headlines.yahoo.co.jp/hl?a=20161124-00000098-dal-ent

            • Don

You gaslit me with this edit ronald ๐Ÿ˜“. Now i sounded like a dumbass who didn’t read lol.

      • honey girl

Lmao I wonder if this was her dad’s doing. “Get rid of this bitch and we wont throw this invitation in the garbage.”

      • Don

Tell me more about this Utada vs Wada feud..

Trump administration has been normalizing Nazism lately so who knows, maybe KKK46 is part of their agenda ๐Ÿ˜›

        • Utada’s mom and Akiko didn’t get along.

          • Don

That’s it? I was hoping for more deets..

            • honey girl
              • Don

                Thank you!

“There’s also the more personal and awkward reason of wanting to avoid Kiyoshi Maekawa (Keiko Fuji’s first husband) as well as other contemporaries who were/are Kohaku mainstays. It’s not exactly a secret that Akiko Wada held a grudge against Utada’s mom, and the enka world during the Showa era was a bit of a cesspool in general. That’s where the whole “we won’t let Hikaru sing/hear/experience enka” thing that her parents practiced during her childhood came from.”

“Good you pointed that out. Wada got pissy on a wide show when Utada announced her baby’s birth last year. Wada sarcastically said she thinks Utada was just announcing the news to hype for a new song, people didn’t like that. She’s made a lot of rude comments about Utada in the past as well.”

Good riddance Wada and I don’t see Kiyoshi on the list either. Hikki just schooled them.

                • yamakita

Wow, juicy back story! Wada hell? This feud sounds silly, but now Akiko knows where she stands.

                  • She *SITS*. Betches SIT.

                    Queens STAND (onstage).

      • kamben is here

LOL Golden Bomber fan here *waves*

I suspect that Kiryuuin must have declined the invitation (IF they were invited in the first place) or something. Golden Bomber has tons of incredible, catchy songs, so he must have felt a bit sad or whatever that the only song that the general public cares about is Memeshikute XD

Songs like 101Kaime no Noroi and Dance My Generation are popular, but not popular enough to be known and liked by the general public I guess. As a fan I’m sad, but there’s nothing fans can do about this LOL. I wish I could.

By the way, they released only TWO singles this year, and dear god, I want to pinch Kiryuuin for not wanting to include bonus/PV/etc in their new singles! I love their songs so much and I’d totally buy any bonuses along with them.

        Ahh sorry for ranting -.-

      • Tuan Kacang

If Golden Bomber’s there, I wonder what will they do. An Odoru Ponpokorin cover? (They are the singers of the current Chibi Maruko Chan opening after all)

        • kamben is here

I honestly want to know how relevant they are in the general public’s eyes these days.

Is Odoru Ponpokorin popular enough…? I bought that single but they didn’t appear on Music Station for the single…did they?

Or this could be Kiryuuin’s doing.

          • Tuan Kacang

Well, the single placed around 21st on weekly oricon… and it’s quite refreshing to hear one after hearing the e-girls version

            • kamben is here

              21st…oh my. I see.
and LOL I had no idea there’s an egirls version.

I must say that this single is pretty weak compared to their previous singles. Their previous singles are incredible, imo. I am looking forward to what kind of song Kiryuuin will make next.

      • yamakita

Wow, thanks for pointing that out! Wada got cut, wada f***? Actually, I’m not a fan, but I guess they’re slowly cutting out all the old-timers. Kohaku hasn’t been the same since they cut out Kobayashi Sachiko!

        • Thomas

took me a while to get that pun ๐Ÿ˜‚

        • maguro part deux

It isn’t Sachiko I miss so much as her animatronic Gundam-like dresses.

    • Whoa, this is Hikki’s first time in Kohaku?

      • lol

she usually declined because its family time

        • wtf

family time = was overseas recording

go look at her blog, she was usually in america during christmas season for recording or during utada era, doing meetings, etc.

    • honey girl

LIKE JUST GIVE IT TO THE RED TEAM ALREADY. MY QUEEN IS CONTINUOUSLY DELIVERING. BLESS THIS REIGNING JPOP QUEEN!!! ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ

      • Thomas

Apparently the next Fantรดme music video will be out in December so maybe she’ll sing whatever song it’s for instead of Hanataba wo Kimi ni! ๐Ÿ‘€ I want her to slay us with Ore no Kanojo ๐Ÿ˜ญ

        • Historia Lenz

          Yes, to Ore no Kanojo!

    • So I guess RADWIMPS has the anime spot.

      • Chris

        Hmm, kinda expecting someone else…

        • Nana Mizuki? Eir Aoi? Aqours?

          • Tuan Kacang

Not Eir, since she’s recovering from her sickness.

Aqours probably when they are about to release their final songs (Like ฮผ’s ), but I’d like to see them next year…

maybe Karen Aoki – Daisuke Hasegawa (Jojo Part 4 OP3)?

        • Don

          Dean Fujioka HISTORY MAKER?

    • eplizo

Yesss Queen! Still won’t bother watching this live though lol.

    • Awwww… Kouhaku’s stages are from early 2000, I want see something new, fresh and sparkle.

Utada, AKB and E girls and even johnnys could bring so good stages because they have good songs and aren’t shy on the stage, so i really want see something like ama or mtv awards!
Bring new design in your stages!

      • Don

Was the ama or mtv stage that impressive though?

    • Chris

miwa is in (maybe because of her choir thing to the school or whatever), so I guess Ohara Sakurako will be dropped, now I wonder if Leo Ieiri will be there or not.

RADWIMPS finally! Kimi no Na wa is seriously giving them a huge impact.

No more anime spot? Like… Maaya Sakamoto or maybe.. Kalafina?

      • RADWIMPS is probably the anime spot. “Kimi no Na wa” is the only reason they’re debuting.

        • Chris

I see, then since you mentioned above “the first set of performers”, so more artists will be announced later?

          • I didn’t write this. There may be some more in the future.

      • Don

        Leo Ieri>>Sakurako>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>miwa.

        • Chris

          lol, sorry but for me:

          miwa>>Leo Ieiri>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Sakurako.

          • Don

Eeww..miwa vocals & songs are so annoying, i rather listen to boring Sakurako.

            • Chris

I have to admit that tho, everything after third album she became more and more annoying.

              • Liokt

You mean “Delight”? Man, I love “ONENESS” with all my heart…! haha’ The b-sides of miwa’s latest single are quite enjoyable too, but yeah this year was pretty meh for her. I’d say the same about Leo: “WE” was a disappointment to me, mainly because my expectations went very high after the release of “Bokutachi no Mirai”, which I love. “Koukotsu” is the only album-exclusive track from “WE” that I truly like, and that’s pretty sad for me to saying, since I like (a lot) all her albums before this one.

                • Chris

I think ONENESS is not entirely ‘meh’, but.. ever since the release of fighting girls (which personally I think it’s a weak single, Sora no Kanata is so much better) onwards, I really have the lowest expectation for the next album (not to mention there are so many singles preceding the album, plus, that hideous album cover, nice concept but poor execution imo). ONENESS felt like an ‘idol album’ for me, Stress-Free is seriously a joke (maybe she’s pulling another Merry-Go-Round but please).

That’s my opinion on ONENESS, the album track itself is superb though. But some of recent tracks are nice, like Yozora and Yui’s B-side. One more thing, I prefer she cover more songs, she’s really good at it.

As for Leo, I have the same thoughts, Bokutachi no Mirai sets her current standard, but what comes after that is just a big turn-off, just like miwa did with Delight and ONENESS imo. Leo didn’t have any hit for this year and she only focused in her music I think? While miwa is actively doing things other than music, like school project and so on (the choir thing I mentioned above), I guess that’s the reason why she’s still (or even more maybe?) relevant and invited, but seriously tho, her current music.

                  • Liokt

Now that you said… “ONENESS” actually sounds like an ‘idol album’, it’s very pop-ish, but I think this style fits her better, or at least more than the singer-songwriter one. Don’t get me wrong, but her first album “guitarissimo” is a collection of leftovers from YUI, I don’t see/feel any sight of originality or personality in it. “guitarium” is way better because it has something fresh: it marks the start of this mixtured style “singer-songwriter + pop idol” which now I consider one of her trademarks. “Delight” is the climax of this mixture (at this point well-balanced, in my pov), and after it she’s running “dramatically” between these two not-so-opposite sides. Sometimes she almost forget her singer-songwriter roots (“ONENESS” is a good example), sometimes she’s so singer-songwriter that is hard to handle (a.k.a. “miwa ballad collection ~graduation~”), but overall she’s always trying to balance (without much success, I think, hahaha) these styles.

So that’s why I’m always curious to see what’s coming next from her; this time is not different, but I must confess I’m a bit underwhelmed because of the past three releases. “Stress Free” is an inoffensive song to me: I don’t like it but I don’t hate it; the truth is that I barely listen to it… I also love “Sora no Kanata” and her cover songs; “LOVE LOVE LOVE” is really touching with her singing. I like the concept behind those “ONENESS” covers and I love the RE cover, but the other is awful, too much photoshop. Do you like “B.O.Y.” and/or “Philosophy”? Two of my recent favorites from her.

                    …Too much talking! Sorry.

                    • Chris

OH GOD I DIDN’T SEE THIS OMG VERY SORRY

Anyway, your opinions about her albums kinda make me think about her identity, it’s true that she’s penned as ‘singer-songwriter’ but at certain point, she’s kinda lost in it. I love B.O.Y simply because I also like Delight (title track) and Hikari e, while Philosophy is just good, not outstanding.

Faith is a special song for me too, it screams chAngE at first but it’s just shows her ‘singer-songwriter’ image from it, which I love.

Can we talk somewhere on Twitter or elsewhere? I couldn’t find anyone to discuss about her and since I just saw this, I’m totally excited, I feel like can make an essay out of this, so many things to talk about her lol

                      Sorry once again though

                      • Liokt

Ohhh, it’s fine! Man, I use Last.fm and Tumblr hahaha, the only two social media I keep active.
I’m so excited about “SPLASHโ˜†WORLD”! That promo pic is so gorgeous โ™ฅ

          • wtf

            miwa is a fucking bore

            • Chris

              her recent stuff are.

i find sakurako is worse though.

              • Don

At least Sakurako has better vocals than miwa’s screeching

    • sanchan

Hard to believe its the first time for PUFFY

      • ???

Did she has a hit this year? An anniversary like KinkiKids? A long due comeback like Yellow Monkey?

        • Taima-kun

it’s also the duo’s 20th anniversary this year

          • ???

They aren’t as well received as Yellow Monkey or Kinki Kids. A lot on the net said PUFFY are stale choice for a debut.

they won without her last year…

        • honey girl

HIKKI is going to make the Red team win!

          • Don

There are rumors Utada won’t be at the venue on the day itself. She’ll be performing live or pre-recorded in the States.

      • Ahmad Ridwan

not this year, gen, kenta and radwimps are the social phenomenons

    • Summersplash

And why is SZ keeps on being invited? Ijima is out already. Shouldnt the spot be given to Jump or even kisumai?
I’m sooooo Happy to see kinki’s name, I cant believe that THE best singing group of JE hadn’t been invited but kiddies group (back then) like SZ and NYC have.

      • ???

Who’s the best singing group in JE?

        • monet

kinki i think is widely accepted, V6 is less accepted but…

          • Ara

            YES

          • ???

That last song by them, what’s the name? V6 as a group is pretty solid. I don’t like Ken & Go’s voices though but they worked well in harmonizing.

            • phoe-enix

KimiKimi XD Their 2013 single (I don’t remember the full title…it’s long O.O)

That clip shows how much their singing ability has improved over the years

        • lol

          Kinki maybe

        • Himi Tsu

Yeah Kiki Kids are famous for their singing. I would prefer Tegomass through :) they have breathtaking a capella and acoustics songs in concert.

          • ???

I like Dots but Doko is too nassal. Teggo is over the top and Massu is inconsistent.

      • Mayel

I think SZ being there is to represent juniors as well lol HSJ and juniors don’t match now (unlike NYC and juniors)

      • neko

Well I like sexy zone more that kisumai and I don’t like jump so maybe there are other people like me outh there

      • Guest

Ask Johnny, I think he’s the one behind this lol. Johnny is so powerful that I believe all he has to do is offer Arashi, and NHK will give him a number of slots for him to freely choose his artists.

      • Himi Tsu

Aren’t Jump busy with their end of year concert?

But I do think that SZ and NYC didn’t have their place in Kouhaku. And I would to see Jump there :)

    • Sad to not see Babymetal in kouhaku roster.

But the only reason is that Kobametal, Babymetal producer, declined the invitation. Or so i want to convince myself

      • Oxox

Well, i sure don’t see what criteria BABYMETAL does not fulfill in order to get an invite…

There was a tabloid that wrote something about BABYMETAL doing a collaboration with Radio Fish at Kohaku a couple of days ago, in the event that was not complete bullshit i wonder if that means they could be there in a “special guest” capacity?

      • Don

Do you know if they are performing for other year end shows?

        • Oxox

They are on tour with Red Hot Chili Peppers in the UK until December 17, after that i guess it might be possible?

    • kamben is here

Golden Bomber, you guys released only two singles this year, and that best album will only be released in December, and now this.

I’m not surprised at all. I’m your huge fan and I think it’s safe to say that you guys are starting to become irrelevant in the general public eyes :(

Odoru Ponpokorin is good, but not amazing like your older releases.

That, and I feel that you, Kiryuuin, must have declined Kouhaku or something this time.

    • Doopy

Where’s LOVERIN TAMBURIN? Ash gonna be so sad!

    • Tuan Kacang

The Yellow Monkey? Will they perform Tactics?

That will be an eargasm for those Rurouni Kenshin fans…

    • sam

      probably final Heisei Era Kohaku

    • me

      AI, Ayaka, Hikki!
      wooowww

    • Mio

Sobbing @ V6 being on it this year….kings

    • Guilherme Teruya

I know I’ll probably be alone here but I miss Ayu on Kouhaku
And Angela Aki, but she hasn’t been back yet right?

      • As much as I love Ayu, I’m glad she won’t perform this year. She’s usually a mess.

        • Guilherme Teruya

Lol yea, unfortunately you’re right, but I do miss her on those big events.

      • Liokt

Yes, Angela Aki is on hiatus since 2014… I also miss her a lot.

        • Guilherme Teruya

Wasn’t she recording something for Disney? I was hoping it would mean the end of her hiatus…

    • wtf

      m-m-miwa…????

    • The silent majority has spoken! ^/

also, let’s not pretend that the western Nazi bubble around KKK46 interested anyone in Japan.

      • yamakita

Well, fascism is rising globally… It doesn’t end with US. Europe will continue the trend. There is more to come…. :/

        • Thomas

Europe is already on it, sadly :/

    • This is it? Isn’t the list usually longer or was I hallucinating?…

      • yamakita

Hmm… you are right! But the article does begin with “first set of performers” so maybe there are a couple more on each team plus special performances that are not part of the competition?

    • Ahmad Ridwan

I was 99% sure keyaki won’t be invited in this year kohaku, especially after they’ve been snubbed by 2 major awards. but hell I was wrong. KKK46 FIGHTING!!!

    • yamakita

Noooo! They cut Hosokawa Takashi, my favorite ojisan!!!

    • Satowwwshi

Rooting for Arashi and Hikki! I’m pumped to see their performances. Congrats to Kinki Kids too for finally participating. I hope jump gets to be invited too, i’d love to see them there

    • dani

Here for THE YELLOW MONKEY first attend

    • HevRev

Arashi, TOKIO, V6 and now Kinki Kids as well. Very happy for them but I’m wondering now who the heck is hosting Johnny’s Countdown – the 2013/14 Countdown was dominated by the younger acts while a lot of the older acts were at Kohaku, now worried 2016/17 is going to go the same way…

      • guest

KinKi went to Kouhaku this year so their 20th anniversary won’t outshine HSJ’s 10th anniversary. It was KinKi Kids who always had concerts in Tokyo Dome on Dec 31st and Jan 1st (maybe it’s the reason they weren’t on Kouhaku?), but this year it’s HSJ who gets those.
Possibly they’ll be the ones hosting Johnny’s Countdown, since it’ll be on their stage. I wouldn’t be surprised if no one from Kouhaku will go to JCD, except for SZ – that way most of the focus will be on HSJ and their 10th anniversary :/

        • ???

I think HSJ is awesome so don’t mind them hosting JCD for a change. Tbh I’m warming up to the junior groups like Johnny West, Kisumai and even SZ (especially after recent promo with arashi)

          • guest

HSJ is the only younger group that I find boring, so I hope they won’t be taking half of the screen time. They should let Kawai MC tbh.

      • james

Obviously, Hey! Say! JUMP is goin to host this year’s JCD. They are the future of Johnny’s

      • HevRev

I will admit, I like HSJ better than I have in the past but I still love the older groups more so I look forward the Countdown all year and 2013/14 was a big let down for me. I guess we’ll have to wait and see. Of course the return of a certain group would make it perfect for me but that’s probably a little too hopeful…

    • Kiki

Finally PUFFY has their well deserved spot!

    • james

Will SMAP participate in this year kohaku?

    • WaNiSu

do you know will there be streams to watch it
