Oricon Releases Its Favorite Artist Ranking for 2016

The year is coming to a close, so the end of year rankings are upon us! Today, Oricon revealed its Favorite Artist Ranking for 2016. In the 12 previous years this feature has ran, Oricon’s magazine Only★Star was in charge, but the magazine has now been folded into Oricon proper. Outside of that change, pretty much everything else is the same. This ranking is based on a survey which polls 20,000 Japanese citizens of different age groups in order to reach a respectable representation of the public’s opinion. While it is not totally accurate, the poll remains a very interesting statistic to consider, particularly when compared to the results for previous years.

In keeping with things being pretty much the same, Arashi tops the Favorite Artist Ranking for the seventh year in a row, a new record. The group also topped the teens and 20-something rankings. When asked why they chose Arashi as their favorite, respondents named things such as the group’s unity, their positive attitude, their dutifulness, their performance ability, and their ability to cross musical genres.

The rest of the top 3 is a flip flop of last year, with Ikimonogakari rising from 3 to 2, while Mr.Children falls from 2 to 3.

Check out the rest of the rankings below!

No 48/46g and LDH groups in top 20? That’s a suprise for me. Anyway, congrats Arashi!

      • No LDH groups were in last year and only AKB48 was in last year, at #16.

        • monica_monami

Oh! I thought at least sandaime would be there since they sold so many album last year. Eeks, i guess people lost interest in akb this year.

          • But is 3JSB really anyone’s favorite act? Let’s be real here…

            • Ryusei

I’ve seen enough japanese guys on instagram completely copying their clothes, hairstyles etc. (especially ryuji and omi) to say yes to this. Not to say that this has anything to do with if they would appear on a poll but just saying

              • vegi

For example? just curious. I don’t know who ryuji & omi so can’t imagine what they were copying.

                • Ryusei

what do you mean “for example”? As for the guys: Imaichi ryuji and tosaka hiroomi you can google them. Here’s one that copies ryuji: https://www.instagram.com/touma_u/

                  • vegi

you know, what kind of clothing, brand or hairstyle. You could put Omi (more familiar with him as Tosaka) or Ryuji style that has been copied as examples, it doesn’t have to be those guys who copied them.

                  • vegi

                    Oh, you edited your reply.
That’s certainly a copy but i’m not a fan of the thin mustache look lol.

                    • Ryusei

Me neither haha i kinda like it on ryuji but on most people moustaches arent my thing

                      • vegi

He wouldn’t be unique without his thin stache tbh. Actually I initially don’t know his name but know him as mustached vocalist. Although, Ryuji in the group picture I posted above with his leopard pants and shawl looks a bit too much like Pikotaro lol

                  • Kanjo Maru

                    Clearly copying Piko-taro. Come on

                    :P

              • Ashley

Last month I went to a school festival at one of the local schools that goes from kindergarten to college. Almost all guys there not in a school uniform were dressed like Sandaime. And all my Japanese friends absolutely love them. So I’m pretty shocked they don’t rank at all.

                • vegi

                  They dressed like this?
                  http://3jsb-joho.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/67ffe1bd200325014c29394caebb5498.jpg
Maybe they weren’t copying 3jsb but just the street style/ oraora kei?I can’t find something specifically uniquely “theirs” in clothing except when it comes to hairstyle (Elly) or a combination of that with facial hair (ryuji).

                  • rme

exactly, yanki/hiphop/oraora style has been around. guys aren’t copying their styles because sandaime are fashion innovators lol, they’re all emulating the same looks.

                    • vegi

Miyake Ken, Yasuda Shota, other Johnny’s and AAA members have been wearing the same style as those 3 left members (gunchan?,?, Tosaka) for years now. This kind of style is not uniquely Sandaime’s.

                  • Ashley

The ones I see the most are the jean jackets or green jacks with the tall brown boots. I’m not saying JSB is original. But when they even copy the manner in which they wear it (if a guy likes Omi he wears the jacket draped over is shoulders) it’s pretty obvious they are copying JSB. I was actually explaining this to a friend of mine at the festival and some guys who had been following us promptly left after I pulled up Omi’s instagram and we started laughing… Also I’m not basing my observations off the Internet but my daily life living in Japan.

              • H

Their style (oraora style) has been around for ages, sis. lol

                • Ryusei

Doesnt change the fact that people are specifically copying them “sis”

                  • rme

and they’re ripping off Big Bang who’s copying others 👏🏽

              • FFS

Maybe, people only like their style but not the act.
Yes, their clothes, hairstyles, etc are pretty cool for like teens to copy.

            • xameix

*raises hand* yes!! they’re my favorite act. But honestly, their last singles has been kinda…. really sh!tyy. Oh god especially welcome to tokyo. Hoping for a better comeback 🙏🙏

      • demasta

was surprised too, but grats Arashi!

      • vegi

Exile is #10 voted by teens this year. No one cared for 48/46 groups in this popularity survey.
20,000 respondents is a pretty large participation for a survey too. This sounds legit but I wonder what method they used. Internet survey?

        • monica_monami

Yes, i saw that after taking a look one more time. thank for pointed it out. No idea how they did the survey but considering they tried to get that many people with various age spans sounded quite reliable. I guess Arashi is still relevant this year.

    • Ryusei

      come through JUJU

    • surfboardt

ngl, I’m cackling at how Kana is rising in the 10s demographic considering how Ronald dragged her for basically appealing towards an even younger demographic compared to previous eras.

      • starlightshimmers

Kana is basically set to be the top female soloist once those 10’s become 20’s, the future is in her favour.

        • Or will the drop her because they think she’s childish?

          • starlightshimmers

I’m in my mid-20’s and I don’t think Kana Nishino is childish.

    • monica_monami

Just realized no new J&A younger act in the list, even among younger demographic. Arashi wont be there forever to be their cash cow, J&A need to come out with their successor already by now.

      • vegi

I like that they are pushing Jump more and they came out with a lot of great music but the rumors & scandals are a turn off for many. Also they have to many members.
Sexy Zone being pushed more with Arashi made me like them more. Those silly kids XD

        • monica_monami

Yes, i kinda like sexy zone now that they all grew up haha they hv variety talent i can see. Not so many members, easy to remember. They need to build their public image. I am not so fond of their song though.

        • Mahdyah Rosita

Maybe the rumors are a bit of an annoyance, I myself feel sick about it. But I don’t think the members quantity matters in this. Yes they do have many members but each of them has their own uniqueness and talent. Also they have improved over the years. Anyway kudos for both Sexy Zone and Hey! Say! JUMP.

          • vegi

Too many members made it harder for general public to remember/ recognize them. Its harder to distinguish themselves.

    • light

      Arashi still going strong =)

    • Midna

      :D

    • Meutia S Aishah

just wondering, but why there’s no 48’s group in all categories? I thought they’re popular enough to be in teens categories at least?

    • my children

When asked why they chose Arashi as their favorite, respondents named things such as the group’s unity, their positive attitude, their dutifulness, their performance ability, and their ability to cross musical genres.

Listing all the things they are that makes momma proud ( °̥̥̥̥̥̥̥̥◡͐°̥̥̥̥̥̥̥̥)

Girlschannel has been extra like always with the announcement. It has been 7 years, they should get it by now “artist” includes those who performs a musical production. Even their peers like Hoshino Gen acknowledge Arashi’s artistry.

      • GT

Wow, really Hoshino Gen? Can you elaborate more please. Would love to know what he said about them.

        • my children

He praised Arashi’s great skills & effort in Japonism and recommended their DVD during Dream Festival.

    • H

Wasnt Only Star always Oricon Magazine?

Anyway it’s nice not to see that idols haven’t dominated too much.

    • Guest

Ikimonogakari continues to rank so high yet their digital and physical sales keep taking a blow.

    • the groupie who
    • Nya

7 years ago I didn’t think Arashi would be still successful at this time. I used to think they could fall fast after the hype of the 10th anniv passed.
But they’ve reached such a good rhythm and stability,
I am very proud of them <3

What kind of statistic method they used that can make 20,000 opinion can reach a respectable representation
of 90M Japanese’s opinion? It’s not even reach 1% of Japanese population.

I don’t think this ranking legit. More like magazine using name that they think popular in order to sell.

      • geek

20k is more than enough respondents for Japan’s population. I suggest you read up on statistics why this is so. Sure the bigger sample size the more accurate it is but if you compare to other such entertainment related survey in Japan, 20k is one of the highest sample size.

However I do want to read the questionnaires myself and curious what method they used.

A list of everything to not listen to in 2016, thanks Oricon!

        Stay salty :D

    • HoneyBeat

No V6 but that’s okay. Still #1 in my heart lol. Glad to see TOKIO up there though!

    • Sakura Shinzo

am i thinking to much if i said that any pole that don’t have AKB is a cheat .. where is kis my ft2 .. and other more relate able artist

      • AKB is popular in the sense that they sell a lot and people know who they are, but do people really like them as much?

And who are these other more relatable artists?

        • vegi

Kisumai aren’t that relatable either. They had no significant presence this year unlike other younger Johnny’s groups like Jump, West or SZ.

        • Sakura Shinzo

if they sell out the most doesn’t that mean people really like them or does people buy something that they don’t like ..
relatable artists like babymetal and E-Girls :)

          • I think everyone knows that AKB’s sales don’t really mean much as far as real popularity. It’s very fanbase-driven.

BABYMETAL isn’t a relatable act, while E-girls is a youth act.

    • Deep River

      Namie slaying!

    • Asha

Well that is actually a surprise since I was actually expecting Sandaime to be top or at least somewhere in the top 10. But apparently not. It still at par with what the general public seems to like and that sample size used is actually good.

Othet polls have smaller sample size so…
