I feel like the only person who doesn’t get Keyakizaka’s appeal. Their songs sound lifeless.

I don’t mind the main 48 groups, since they mainly adhere to the 70s~80s esque idol kayokyoku-mold (KFC. 365 Nichi, Tsubasa wa Iranai etc.) which I have a soft spot for. Keyakizaka is also an Akimoto project at the end of the day, but unlike the 48s their whole image is just so contrived.

It doesn’t help either that their management is advertising the center girl as the “next Momoe Yamaguchi” which is beyond embarrassing.

As a fan of 48, I find Keyakizaka to be refreshing. I love what they’ve been doing to Hirate Yurina, she gives me different vibes compared to Acchan (Maeda Atsuko). I prefer Keyaki more than Nogi. Also, AKB’s earlier songs like Keibetsu Shiteita Aijo, Skirt Hirari, etc are different from KFC and most of their songs in the recent years (which I’m not a fan of, personally).

I find this analysis baffling, as AKB’s earlier and more recent songs are still very much the quintessential kayokyoku-type songs (Love Trip / High Tension / Shoot Sign). Long story short, arrange the instrumentals into a live-orchestra type setting and it’ll fit right in alongside Pink Lady, Junko Sakurada, Hiromi Iwasaki etc.

The musical approach behind Keyaki’s songs is markedly different. I’m personally not a fan of it, but I can understand why others will like it for being refreshing.

well, everything is not for everyone, I guess

Keyakizaka is a hit or miss. I was really disappointed with the vocal arrangement for this new song. It’s weak.

Mai Kuraki’s performance was the shining moment of this week’s Music Station. Mai looks lovely in that kimono.
