Oricon Flashback: Week of 1/16

We’re back with this week’s edition of Oricon Flashback. This is where we look back on what topped Oricon this week 5, 10, 15, and 20 years ago. Think of it as a way to reminisce and learn about the past of Japanese music.

Note: Oricon was on holiday break last week in 1997, 2002, and 2007, so that week’s numbers and this week’s numbers are combined. The numbers for 2012 are regular though.

I remember going on a group outing with my co-workers for karaoke in Kure, Hiroshima back in 2001. Everyone was picking easy to sing songs like the Dango song, Banzai, etc. but someone suggested we sing some Ayu. A girl volunteered and wanted to sing evolution because it was a current song that all of us knew. All I remember was she was wheezing trying to sing the entirety of the chorus while at the same trying to mimic the way Hamasaki sings. I’ll never forget how red this poor girl’s face got…and the fact that no one even flinched.
