First visuals released for live-action Gintama sequel

The very first visuals have been released for the live-action sequel for Gintama.

Shun Oguri, Kanna Hashimoto, and Masaki Suda will all be reprising their roles in the upcoming film. They will be playing Gintoki Sakata, Shinpachi Shimura, and Kagura, respectively.

Actor and film director Jiri Sato will also be joining the cast, but the character he will be playing has yet to be revealed.

The first character visuals released for the film have text corresponding to the character too, where they somewhat break the “third wall”. Gintoki’s text reads “It’s double pressure for a sequel”, Shinpachi’s says “I hope it’s double ticket sales too”, and Kagura’s text reads “It would be great if the lunch on the set is double too!”

The first Gintama film was very successful, it earned over 950 million yen in just 4 days and received positive reception from both fans and critics. The film had a limited release to select Canadian and American theaters, and on March 6th, 2018 a DVD/blu-ray combo pack was released for North American fans.

Oguri commented that he’s very pleased the film is receiving a sequel, and is thankful that he’s able to work with Yuichi Fukuda (director) and the cast again. He still kept in touch with many of them after filming, so it didn’t really feel like a long time when they all got back together to work again.

Hashimoto stated that the entire cast and crew feels like a giant family. Every scene filmed was fun, and it was difficult for her to not burst into laughter. She felt that everyone was truly enjoying making the film.

Gintama is one of the most successful manga series of all time, in Japan alone over 50 million copies of the series are in print. It’s final arc “climax” was released in February 2018.

Tentatively titled Gintama 2, it will be released to Japanese theaters on August 17th.
