#1 Song Review: Week of 5/31 – 6/6 (AKB48 v. Namie Amuro)

Hello, Arama! Japan readers and welcome to this week’s installment of #1 Song Review! Last week saw GOT7 defeat THE IDOLM@STER, Beverly, and TrySail. This week, we have two newcomers facing off. Find out what various staff members thought of the songs that topped the physical and digital charts this week and share your thoughts on them too!

Oricon #1 / Billboard #1: AKB48 – Negaigoto no Mochigusare (Recochoku #21 / iTunes #37)

Ronald: This is pleasant. It’s a nice chanson-style song. It doesn’t really go anywhere, but at least it’s not some overly cutesy thing like they often do. It would be nice to listen to in the background while doing something else, but not something to intently listen to. 5/10

Recochoku #1 / iTunes #1: Namie Amuro – Just You and I (Oricon #6 / Billboard #2)

Ronald: More like “Just Me and Boredom.” Namie, this should’ve been an album track, not a single. I know I drag Namie a lot for being an old idol who doesn’t contribute to her music, but she does have a number of good songs. Too bad she hasn’t had one since “Mint.” This plodding ballad reminds me of another single of hers from last year that bored the crap out of me, “Hero.” I didn’t like “Hero”, so why would I like a sequel? At least it’s not the dated EDM that she’s so fond of doing… 3/10

      This AKB single:
but at least it’s not some overly cutesy thing like they often do

      1 single ago:
I’m glad it’s not one of their stereotypically cute songs

      2 singles ago:
I like the fun, disco vibe of it.

      3 singles ago:
I like the more pop rock sound this has compared to other AKB48 songs.

      4 singles ago:
This is probably one of the most tolerable AKB48 songs I’ve heard in ages.

      5 singles ago:
It’s not as hard to listen to as their more cutesy material.

      365 nichi:
This is pleasant. It’s nothing too cute

Just You and I is released and composed for the drama tie-up and that’s one of the ways how she stays relevant in charts and maintain her popularity as a pop artist. It’s difficult for dance tunes to top the chart in Japan.

Mint charted #1 and went platinum (for digital sales).

    • What

Question: Is Namie considered an “idol” or an “artist” by the public?

      • Curel

She would definitely be considered an idol during the 90’s, what with her time with SUPER MONKEY’S and such. I am not sure if at some point she “transcended” from being an idol to an entertainer, “artist”, etc. though, or what distinctions there are for that, if there are any.

Some people can only see two colors: black and white.
        Namie is neither.

    • “This plodding ballad reminds me of another single of hers from last year that bored the crap out of me, “Hero.””

Wasn’t “Hero” a tie-in song for the Olympics? Seems like she just phones it in for tie-ins because they don’t matter to her. Just easy money and publicity.

      • But everything is a tie-in…

        • Diego

There are many kinds of tie-ins though. Olympics and prime time dramas such as “Haha ni Naru” or “Boku no Yabai Tsuma” are great tie-ins and she gets much more attention and publicity from them.

          • But the songs she does for them are also complete bores.

I voted for AKB’s song because it has this fantasy anime ending vibe going on and the MV was all kinds of cute, I really liked those friends that wanted to be bakers together in the future <3 but I didn't find Namie's one boring at all, is not like it got me hook up but it can grow on me I think
