#1 Song Review: Week of 3/29 – 4/4 (Sexy Zone v. Austin Mahone)

Hello, Arama! Japan readers and welcome to this week’s installment of #1 Song Review! Last week saw Nogizaka46 defeat Doughnuts Hole. This week, we have two newcomers facing off against each other. Find out what various staff members thought of the songs that topped the physical and digital charts this week and share your thoughts on them too!

Oricon #1 / Billboard #1: Sexy Zone – ROCK THA TOWN (not released digitally)

Ronald: Nothing is going to get rocked by these guys. They sound so bored and unconvincing. And why does the one guy that looks a bit like a monkey think his grunting is wanted or needed? It’s quite horrible actually. And the fact that he can do it mixed with a whiny vocal is even more unappealing. And those back and forth vocals between the members, God… Who thought this was a good idea? It’s just highlighting the lack of chemistry in this group. With crap like this, it’s no wonder Sexy Zone is basically the bottom of the barrel of Johnny’s groups (A.B.C-Z is still even lower though). 1/10

Recochoku #1 / iTunes #1: Austin Mahone – Dirty Work (not released physically / Billboard #6)

Ronald: What am I supposed to say about this song? It’s basic crap that I would hear on the radio, if I listened to the radio, and would promptly turn off in search of something more palatable. “Dirty Work” is just completely devoid of character or charm. 2/10

Ronald’s Rank:

1. Recochoku #1 / iTunes #1: Austin Mahone – Dirty Work

2. Oricon #1 / Billboard #1: Sexy Zone – ROCK THA TOWN

Which one do you like the most?

really japan Austin Mahone .. really!!

      • WithN

Because it is currently used by Blouson Chiemy in her uber popular and trending, comedy gag. It only sounded good as a background beat to her act and Japan likes to copy her “with B” gag.

The full sound of Austin Mahone Dirty Work without Chiemi-chan gag sounds like crap

it looks like this is a bad week for Ronald, hahaha

    • Javiera Fernandez Vollmer

I happen to know why people are obsessed with that song! I just knew about it yesterday. The song is used in a gag by comedian Blouson Chiemi, here’s a video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yBSWEhjPRnY

      • Himi Tsu

        I love Blouson Chiemi :D

    • Ryusei

i don’t agree either but it’s all about opinion. hence the poll at the end.

        • Ryusei

It was more of a joke than a serious comment….

    • What

    • neko

    • 1996liner

I’m watching Sexy Zone’s MV and I can’t help but laugh at the dude who keeps sticking is tongue out lol XP

      • Himi Tsu

        He’s so ridiculous o.o

    • J-Pop

Well, as a frequent reader of this actually updated, Japanese-entertainment-focused website who listens to Asian music because it’s more diverse, transparent and with way better quality, I’d rather read reviews about Japanese music (preferably from more writers) than this. Why not talk about the next Japanese song on the Recochoku’s chart instead? I mean, obviously we get that these are the songs most listened to by a significant part of the Japanese people, but still this is quite annoying.

    • “Who thought this was a good idea?” – Well, it is topping the charts, so…
      But yeah, horrible track.
