#1 Song Review: Week of 2/8 – 2/14 (NEWS v. Doughnuts Hole)

Hello, Arama! Japan readers and welcome to this week’s installment of #1 Song Review! Last week saw Hoshino Gen defeat A.B.C-Z. This week, we have two newcomers facing off. Find out what various staff members thought of the songs that topped the physical and digital charts this week and share your thoughts on them too!

Oricon #1 / Billboard #1: NEWS – EMMA (not released digitally)

Ronald: Eww, this is gross. Things go to hell right from jump, with the intro that reminds me of “Cotton Eye Joe”, and unfortunately the bit that reminds me of that horrid song pops up throughout the rest of the song. It’s even mixed with a swirly sounding bit that reminds me of “The Wizard of Oz.” Like WTF? Who makes this crap, let alone signs off to release it? I’m just completely lost. 2/10

Recochoku #1 / iTunes #1: Doughnuts Hole – Otona no Okite (not released physically / Billboard #4)

Ronald: Ringo gets another check! Ash is going to kill me, but I like this a lot. You can definitely tell that Ringo is behind this, even moreso than with some other songs she’s given away. At times, it even seems like she’s doing background vocals on this, which I wouldn’t be surprised it was true. There’s a dramatic tension in the song that I really enjoy. I also like the combination of male and female vocals. I’m actually a bit surprised how much I like this because it has such an old time feel to it, like early 20th century. 8.5/10

    • HyperMoot .

otona no okite sounds real Ringoesque, the strings are quite typical of the Saito Neko/Shiina collaborations. Now I’d rather have her sing the stuff she wrote for others during the last two years :(

      • Get ready for “Reimport II.”

        • HyperMoot .

really? have you found any info about that or are you fooling me?

          • It’s bound to happen.

    • No Hoshino Gen this week? I am shocked!! :D I was really starting to think that the guy’s gonna stay #1 for the whole damn year.

    • Ash

“Ash is gonna kill me….” Hey man, it’s your eardrums.

What makes the song sounded so bad for you? Just curious.
        Btw, I like it.

        • well

          he’s just a snob

I know ash is a Shiina Ringo fan. I’m a fan of her too but I like these type of retro inspired songs from her and this particular one is quite catchy.

It’s the sound of a once great artist now just doing a job and phoning it in for the next paycheck. But kudos to you if you’re happy with it.

I’m asking about the song, not your opinion on the the composer. What part of the composition sounded like she’s phoning in?
I like the lyrics and the dynamics of the song build up. While not an original approach, the retro sounds classy and catchy yet it’s definitely not generic. Imo, if Ringo herself sang this song, it would just sound normal. Having Nanako as lead and the others coloring vocals made it more interesting and a delicious earworm.

I guess you must suffer not having a taste towards mainstream and marketable music.

Every great pop music artist becomes a journeyman doing a job at some point…no one can put out staggering works of genius every year or every other year indefinitely. There’s nothing wrong with that as long as they still put out a quality product, and I think this song by Shiina is pretty good.

Thought 2/10 was going to be a bit harsh but nope, that song is awful :/

      • yamakita

I find the jacket-humping choreography more troubling…, speaking from someone who has a soft spot for NEWS after all the changes the group has gone through.

I love Doughnuts Hole’s song so much. The “music video” is gorgeous too!
