    • Question of the week: This is based on Music Station Super Live live stream: How do you feel about KPop fans coming into JPop spaces?

      • Taima-kun
      • Eris_03

As long as they don’t act as arrogant pricks, I don’t really care tbh.

Anyway, I never really thought much about it, but kpop fans are gushing over the camera work and the stage. Never really realized how good it is (maybe because I’m used to it) until they mentioned it.

        • Lol

Korean music cameraman often get you feel headache lol
And they tend to focus on some members only the visual member mostly xD

          • Eris_03

The only thing that i noticed is fans are usually louder. Lol 😂

      • Englabart

I think it’s weird to draw these lines like if you like one you’re not allowed to like or explore the other. It just seems so childish. Let people like what they want and watch what they want. I was originally an anime stan who got into Kpop through Boa and then crossed over back into Jpop because of Kpop breaking out in Japan.

Tbh I find the jpop stan vs kpop stan thing so tedious and annoying on both sides, especially when these non-asian stans start to adopt the policies, cultural attiudes of the asian country they stan (ie jpop stans who aren’t japanese or even asian adopting japan’s anti-Korean or anti-Comfort Woman political stances just because they like japanese entertainment, or kpop stans adopting Korea’s colorist or hyper-competitive attitudes).

      • PigeonPop

I don’t mind it for the most part, but it got a little too obnoxious over at the Arama Discord for my liking with the BTS video spamming / advertising amongst other things.

        • BTS is so unique! BTS is so different! Their songs are so uplifting! They have neo soul and gospel influences!

          • Puppy Power!!!

BTS fans now are what 2Ne1 fans were back many years ago. I say this as an army

        • hasawa

“it got a little too obnoxious over at the Arama Discord for my liking
with the BTS video spamming / advertising amongst other things.”
One of the reason I decided to not sign in on this website (I hope yacchaitai won’t read this! LOL). There’s already enough weebs/pricks to handle here on Arama (which is basically the only website I’m really active on).
I don’t wanna lose any more time and brain cells anywhere else, I’m too old for that shit lol. I hope yall having fun there though :-)

          • yaccha “JoinAramaDiscord” itai

it’s a good chat, a few BTS retards during one stream won’t ruin it

          • Puppy Power!!!

discord is stupid as f. Whose idea was it to get one for arama anyway? it looks fancy but uses too much RAM and can heat up your phone or at worst crash it. Clearly programmed by amateurs

      • AgirlHasNoName

I just let it pass because I don’t want to get stressed about it… Kpop fans will go back to ignoring jpop again anyway so best not to let yourself get affected by it.

      • angel223_

It doesn’t really matter as long as they won’t start kpop vs jpop which they alwaya do to validate kpop supremacy in world.

        • angel223_

I really need to log in for edit button.XD LOL

        • Englabart

tbh for me kpop’s funness reached it’s peak at around 2011 and then things started to go wrong. For me everything with this third gen is so soulless now I can’t see why anyone would think it so superior to what’s happening in Japan.

          • trufax

so at the end of the day you’re still indulging in this useless kpop vs jpop discussion

            • Puppy Power!!!

your only job is to come here to defend kpop. Learn to contribite more. No wonder people find kpop fans annoying

              • trufax

                Girl what

        • Eris_03

A kpop fan said that it’s an honor for Music Station to have BTS 😂.

          • Elodie Genia

I hope there will have not a suicide again, because the last time it was Shinee…

          • rshina

I laughed so hard seeing this.
MS have Linkin Park, Bruno Mars etc (according wikpedia) performing there. and even setting aside them, TVXQ and Twice have been perfoming in MS before BTS. why should MS feels honored?

          • Lol

BTS stan kept asking why their song got cut lol

          • Bobson Dugnutt

Thanks, I needed a good laugh.

      • circe154

I don’t care for fandom wars and think people should like whatever they want, but from the way my friends who are into kpop talk, the English speaking fandom is an awful toxic mess and would rather stay away from it.

        • surfboardt

Pretty much sums up my issue with K-Pop nowadays. A good portion of the fanbase is toxic and fetishizing Korean bodies/culture. Just because a video addresses Korean culture/life doesn’t mean it’s appropriate to go “ARMYYYYYYY”, Korea isn’t a monolith epitomized by K-Pop. Also, some fanbases are way too extreme and not realize their hypocrisy in their actions. A good example would be them harassing CupcakKe off social media just because she said she wanted to fuck Jungkook like they haven’t said the exact thing and probably even wrote fanfic involving him. It’s even more funny considering how they also had no problem with her overtly sexual songs and remixing it with K-Pop despite how they’re all “SHE SAID DIRTY THINGS ABOUT JUNGKOOK, SHAMEFUL WHORE”.

      • I think kpop looks better on Japanese TV. Look:

      • Niche’s Commenting Regulars

So long as they don’t try to do the “I’m sexier/hipper/cooler than you and still an idol” act like the Hallyu years of 2008-2015, the industry is going to give them leeway.

Think about the high times of the Hallyu, a bunch of mature and hip sounds against the archaic and outdated. A deluge of fluff vs the barely contained disdain. It was not a good time to be a JPOP fan when you get called a bunch of insults for your music taste as you sometimes wonder if the grass is greener on the other side.

Nowadays? Idols in Korea don’t try to one up JPOP, they are very bubbly and more relatable to JPOP’s idol groups. Gone are the days of the provocative Beyonce clone groups or the choreo, and in is the relatively similar dog whistle sexual appeal of schoolgirls and more upbeat innocence that KPOP was struggling in between.

So they are welcome again to prove that they can coexist, not push out of the way.

        • But if you never listened to Japanese idols…

      • Still striving for relevancy..

        more fanwars XD

    • Englabart

Question: After Shinee lead singer Jonghyun’s death, I’ve been wondering if there have been any deaths in the Japanese entertainment industry that just completely rocked people to their core. Do you remember any in the music or acting scene?

      • eplizo

First to come to mind for me was Yutaka Ozaki. Probably Hide and Kyu Sakamoto too.

        • yamakita

Just pales in comparison in terms of volume. I read an online article comparing K-entertainment industry to the Hunger Game. I don’t doubt it.

      • PigeonPop

Keiko Fuji. Another one that I didn’t experience in real time, but appeared to be a huge deal was Yukiko Okada (80s idol) — the whole timeline of it all was rather shocking, and her death triggered a number of copycat suicides.

        • The fact that you could see blood and brain fragments leaking from her head in the newspaper…

        • TakeThat

poor girl was only 18 too ;_; … there were speculations that she killed herself after she got rejected by Minegishi Toru. Apparently she left a suicide note where she mentioned his name but it is hidden from the public by her record label.

      • angel223_

Prolly X Japan hide, that really cause lots of his fans similar death.

    • So is Jin no longer Arama’s boyfriend? I’m thinking that Nagase Tomoya is the official husband of my site XD The thirst for him is real over there.

      • yamakita

Really? I don’t get that. And he looks like he should be in Exile instead of being a Johnny heh.

        • What

          LOL you wrong for that

        • Lol

Cant imagine Nagase doing exile dance lol
He is better in johnny band

        • Definitely wouldn’t mind Nagase doing body fan-service along with the other performers lol //

        • iGleaux

Nagase is too good looking to be a Johnny’s.

      • AoZora

Its real everywhere.. even on arama..:)

    • Eris_03

I’m a fairly new fan (only 5 years or so lol), so I wanna ask:
How come even with k-pop’s international “success”and recognition, JE idols still generate more money than them? Like how BTS only earned $20 million from debut to now, but Arashi made $90 million dollar in cd sales in this year alone.

      • Elodie Genia

Digital sales brought less money than physic. Personally I would say kpop have too many bands in average same style so…public is more divided There are some like BTS which are little different (but it’s little in my opinion).

        • Lol

Only youngsters who care with idol in korea 😂😂

      • Urara Kasugano

I think it is mostly because of their insane popularity and also digital sales. Cause BTS is mostly liked by people from teens to early twenties, more teenagers though; while Arashi is liked by a big range starting from a 3 year old ending with a 80 year old (one of the woman 78 years old said that she aged so well because of Arashi and their power)

      • Kuku

Digital sales in korea are so cheap, cd are death

        • Kuku

Only teenagers who cares with idols like bts while arashi are bought by general public and their dvd sales is sooo high

        • trufax

          “cd are death”

          what do you mean?

          • Kunyit

The sales are so low only fans who cares with the chart or wanna get the fansigning ticket care to buy mostly

            • trufax

But they aren’t. I wouldnt call 1 million albums sold with a mini a low number, for instance

              • gus

He/She means the income of album sales are low in South Korea.

                • trufax

“The sales are so low ”

                  Thats not what they said

                  • Kunyit

Okay some idols cd sales cd sales are so low..

                  • gus

the point is, income from music sales in South Korea is far below Japan.

              • iGleaux

That’s not the average for all idols though. Koreans pirate a lot. My Korean friend actually laughed at me when I was on vacation and went to buy a Korean rock band’s CD. She said it was weird seeing someone actually pay for music.

                • trufax

Thats not the average, but kpop sales overall are actually increasing from the last gen. The op was specifically talking about BTS too, who sells a shit ton of physical albums. More than one million with a mini, to be exact

                  • Lol

Not for all groups okay..not all groups names exo and bts lol

And only their stand care about this issue

      • circe154

Japan is the second biggest music market in the world and has 3x as many people as Korea. Kpop acts might be popular in the rest of Asia, but the money’s in Japan, which is why so many of them make Japanese albums.

      • Many reasons, among them:
        1. Japan is the 2nd biggest music market in the world — Japan population is more compared to Korea.
        2. Arashi has wide range of fans, from kids to teenager to adult to old people, everyone loves them.
        3. The price of their singles are more expensive — 3 songs in a single cost around the same price or more than a mini album in Korea.
        4. Their CDs packaging are basic as hell (and i dont know why I’m still buying it lol) but the price is expensive compared to K-pop which has expensive packaging but lower CD price. So they make more profit there than average K-pop albums.
        5. Concert tours and merchandises — they are active doing concert tours throughout the years and thats where all the money comes from — concert tickets and limited edition concert merchandise. And not to mention that the stadium capacity is soooo huge so they might only do like 15 dates but the revenue is just out of this world.
        6. Basically everytime they do something — single, album, variety, concert, drama generate yen every second while K-pop groups use most of their time promoting in events that didnt generate much money.

It has many other factors but above explains why K-pop groups like to promote in Japan. I once read that 1 week in Japan generate more revenue for a K-pop groups than a whole year in Korea. This alone will explain many things on why Japan literally more profitable than any other countries in the world except for the US.

It also explain why SHINee generates more revenue than EXO for SM despite EXO is the one who made headlines for million album sales, countless of year end awards (artist of the year, album of the year, song of the year or etc..) or famous for working EXO to death. But in the end of the day, SHINee with less activities generate more income as they are promoting more in Japan.

        • yamakita

“or famous for working EXO to death” is really funny, though not really, but still very funny!

          • I understand their concerns but J&A artists are more busy imo — concert tours, single/album promotions, weekly variety shows, radio, dramas, movies, cfs and it all happened at the same time. :P

        • rshina

wow, that’s a long but logic explanations.
that explain why several kpop groups have more activity here than in Korea (ex. iKON)

        • Kuku

Korean concert ticket is same or more pricey than japanese concert..the goods are pricey too lol

          • You missed my point on the big venue for Japanese concerts. Arashi for an example usually do Dome tours which the capacity is (50k to 55k) x 2 dates x 5 Domes. And if you include their Kokuritsu concert which can fit around 70k x 3 dates, it will be more profit. So, despite having the same ticket price or merchandise, they lose on other aspect which is capacity which make a whole lot different since concert in Korea is usually only 2 or 3 dates x (20k to 30k) in capacity.

And a K-pop group might be active a whole year in Korea but KinKi Kids for an example only do concert for 4 dates in 2 Domes and they might get larger revenue that the said K-pop group. Imagine they only work for 4 days (3 hours per concert x 4 days = 12 hours) and they get more profit than a K-pop group who work everyday 365 days yearly including the weekends.

            • Kuku

Hmm i was just adding the fact from korean info..
And the korean group rely on the univ music fest for their income as well and the group are working to death around that time
Thanks for the long ass essay xD

              • Yes, what you said its all correct. But I just added more info to show that by just doing the least, Jpop acts are getting more money than Kpop acts hence answering the OP’s original question.

    • rshina

just want to know, who got this Open Post in Saturday and where’re you come from?

    • PigeonPop

Skating drama: Wakaba vs. Kaori for the 2nd spot on the Japanese ladies’ team for Pyeongchang.

      • Wakaba

        • WD79

          I’m leaning towards her too.

    • I was discussing with a friend what were the hit songs online in Japan each year and it went like this (opinion ofc):

      2010: Heavy Rotation, Beginner
      2011: PONPONPON
      2012: -?
      2013: Koisuru Fortune Cookie, RPG
      2014: Gimme Chocolate, Dragon Night
2015: R.Y.U.S.E.I., Watashi igai Watashi jyanaino
      2016: Zenzense, Koi
      2017: Uchiage Hanabi

Anyone got any idea what was the song of the year in 2012? We are talking about popularity in general not the fraud of rankings Oricon has. Was there a popular hit online?

      • gus

Gimme Choco only popular as meme overseas. It didnt chart in Japan. Shin Takarajima was also kinda a hit in 2015, it has 50M views and certified platinum.

        • Any thoughts on 2012 hits tho?

          • WD79

Wouldn’t that be Namie’s Love Story and Che’Nelle’s Believe? Also, Saito Kazuyoshi’s Yasashiku Naritai was pretty popular too.

            • Love Story might be but why isn’t it as popular online then? I feel like Hero had a bigger reception even though it still hasn’t sold has much as Love Story.

              • Thomas

Because they never released the video online, only a very short clip of it

                • There is the full vid uploaded by someone on YouTube but it’s blocked in Japan so it has small views. So weird that the management released some of her older MVs like Dont Wanna Cry and What A Feeling but missed on what was very likely the song of the year back then, who knows maybe they release it in the future and it cathes up like Spitz Robinson or Bump of Chicken’s Tentai Kansoku have now…

              • WD79

I don’t remember whether Love Story was popular online or not, but it did top the Recochoku digital chart of the year.

                • It’s just a matter of not being available online but hell Namies’ channel was just created around the release date of Love Story still :/

            • Bobson Dugnutt

              I agree with Yasashiku Naritai

            • Seems like most of 2012’s hit songs are not available nowadays, Che’nelle released Believe’s PV just this year but it’s not getting much traction so I’m inclined to believe Love Story was the song of 2012 after all.

      • Kuku

        Memeshikute from golden bomber?

        • That was released in 2009 definitely not the song of 2012…

          • Golden Bomber

Yeah but it was a hit along Heavy Rotation in that year.

      • yaccha “JoinAramaDiscord” itai

You could just check download rankings, some of these just look like foreign meme hits. https://entamedata.web.fc2.com/music2/reco_dl_top.html

        • That chart gets even more confusing at certain parts, also completely forgot about the frozen mania back in 2014. Would you call Love Story the song of the year then? It just kinda odd how easy it is to spot the song of the year for most years except 2012, like what happened

          • yaccha “JoinAramaDiscord” itai

Love Story was very popular, it just didn’t get big hype w western fans because it’s slower, everyones attention was on kyary.

      • Just Tim

Speaking of Heavy Rotation, is it true AKB48 performed it live at AX 2010 in L.A. when and where they were the guests of honor?

        • They did perform at LA Nokia Theater I just don’t know if it was part of AX and when did it happen

        • Bobson Dugnutt

I think it was in July of 2010 and part of AX.

      • Man, I have no idea how any of this sound except for maybe Koi (since I love the drama lol). I certainly have different taste than the Japanese public.

        • WD79

You at least need to listen to Zenzense.

          • What I mean by my comment is that I heard some of the songs but didnt really hear it until I memorise the melody. But Zenzense is indeed a really nice song! It kinda remind me of Greeeen’s Kiseki which I super love. :)

            • WD79

It’s also the theme song of Kimi no Na wa (Your Song), so it’s also popular overseas particularly in China and Korea.

      • rshina

I only know 5 songs from all of them, hahaha

    • yamakita

Some crazy Russian hacked my Instagram account. What the hell!!!

    • AoZora

      Watch of the week :
      1. Tokyo Ghoul : Starring Masataka Kubota and Shimizu Fumika.
Well,I was expecting a lot from this movie considering the hype surrounding it. The movie is watchable, but it could have been made more interesting. Kubota was good, but he looked old for his part…The biggest surprise was Fumika. She was really good.. Its sad that she has joined a cult and quit ent biz…. CG effects could have been better.. Aoi Yuu is good too…
      2. Confessions of a Murderer: Starring Fujiwara Tatsuya,Ito Hideaki and Nakamura Toru
Its a good remake from an original Korean. All the three leads were good and the story was tight and not draggy(at least for me). I was able to guess the culprit after watching about 3/4th. Suspense Thrillers suit Fujiwara well and I would like to explore more of his work in this genre…

      • Fujiwara Tatsuya is a good actor and can be very charming in his drama/movie roles. I hate that I enjoy watching him despite knowing his scandals lol.

        • AoZora

I haven’t followed Fujiwara much… Not aware of his scandals…

        • yamakita

What are the scandals?? He seemed to be hot in mid-2000 then kinda went away, but now he’s popping up more again.

I tried to watch Reverse, but what’s wrong with the J-drama these days? I found it unwatchable. The plop seemed forced and just weird.

          • I actually have no details and no not wish to find it further. But he was caught many times doing not so good things by the press. I actually have no idea too but someone before pointed out that he is liked by 2ch and said any artists that are being liked by the community usually a red flag.

      • yamakita

I tried to watch Cheer Dance last night. I ended up skipping it throughout so I watched it in like 10 minutes. I couldn’t help but feel that this was a terrible Japanese interpretation of movies like Bring It On! despite it being based on a true story. What a waste of the talents in this movie.

I’ve had Gintama bookmarked for a couple of weeks. Haven’t found any motivation to watch it because I just hate Oguri!!

Disappointing to hear about Tokyo Ghoul. Not a fan of the manga or anime so not sure I will get around to it. Will check out Confession of a Murderer!

        • AoZora

Yeah.. If you hate an actor you just can’t watch it.. I cannot watch anything that has Arimura kasumi in it.. I skip all her work… Confessions of murderer will be liked by fujiwara fans.. You may find it average or good depending…
Edited : I don’t know if cheer dance meant let’s go jets movie starring hirose Suzu.. It was an average movie for me..
