    • Question of the week: How long have you been waiting on a new album from your faves? Come March, it will be 5 years since Sakanaction’s last album. And in November it will be 3 years since Shiina Ringo’s last album, but I’m not too bothered because I know there will be a new release of some sort next year for her 20th anniversary.

      • HyperMoot .

3 years for Salyu – 6 years for Utada Hikaru – Still waiting for a new Beatles album, beginning to lose hope

        • yamakita

You are in for a very long wait hehe.

        • Utada had an album last year…

          • HyperMoot .

didn’t read the question properly, my baaaad

        • The Dark Dudette

You get accustomed to waiting when you are into J-Ent.

          Anime/manga/albums. Everything tests your patience.

          • yamakita

Cuz it’s virtue in Japanese culture so don’t even think of complaining!!!

            • The Dark Dudette

I’m a loud and obnoxious ‘Mrican, yo. I’mma complain to your mama, to your papa, to your entire neighbourhood.

          • circe154

I’m a big fan of The Venture Brothers. I can handle long waits.

            • Khooni

I waited for Hellsing and InuYasha. Who can beat that? :D

I’m 22 now, which proves I’ve been into this waiting game far too long.

      • surfboardt

Still waiting for mini to make a comeback. 7 years and counting. =/

        • OMG…

          • King Hide

            was CL/2ne1 inspired by her?

        • yacchaitai

          she’s my disqus icon 😢

      • The Dark Dudette

        SNoW.
No point waiting now. She has retired into oblivion.

Watch of the week: After the storm (2016). Personal issues, lack of inspiration, once a praised writer Ryota has become a loser and a slacker. He’s divorced and misses his young son. It took me some time to watch this film, I’m not such a big fan of Hiroshi Abe and the topic didn’t inspire me. I love Kore Eda though. Well, not bad if you like his style but I found it less captivating than previous films.

Rewatch: Your friends (2008). The kind of little flick that reconciles viewers with melodrama. Recollections of a friendship between two teen girls to whom life offered handicap and a terrible disease. Looks so realistic and I found it rather heartbreaking (there’s one scene with a painting on the ceiling in a hospital room, OMG, handkerchief overuse)

      • what are your favorite Hirokazu Koreeda films btw?
other than Nobody Knows of course. :p

Like Father Like Son – Still Walking – Air doll

          • yamakita

Was able to find Like Father Like Son so I’ll be watching this one instead. I LOVE Maki Yoko after watching her in Mondai no Aru Restaurant.

            • HyperMoot .

it’s a drama right? Darn, I should watch some, seems I’m missing quite a deal of good acting. She’s the most likeable character in Like Father Like Son imb. First time I noticed her was in this curious little flick: http://asianwiki.com/The_Ravine_of_Goodbye

              • yamakita

Will definitely check out Ravine! I just finished watching Like Father Like Son. OMG!!! My nose is raw from being blown so much!!! Everything is superb about it. The little kids are so precious–so natural, too. I’ve never been a big fan of Fukuyama, but this movie makes him very likeable! I don’t think there is any bad character except for the vile, vile, vile, vile, vile, vile, vile nurse. I just don’t know how she can ever be forgivable. So evil x 9000. This is the most entertaining slow movie ever. I wasn’t bored once.

I’m not a big drama watcher because I’ve got ADD, but Mondai is definitely worth watching. It’s got a great cast who’s gone on to become great stars. It’s one of my all-time favorites, and I’ve got like only two :)

                • HyperMoot .

really glad you liked it, I wasn’t sure cause Kore Eda’s movies are really slow paced but he is a genius when it comes to deal with family issues, he has a very special way of filming and often makes wee kids the true heroes. You might try I wish (Kiseki) which is one of the sweetest movies featuring kids as main characters. Still walking is even slower than Like Father Like Son but it’s maybe his masterpiece (Abe Hiroshi is awesome in that one btw). Then on the arty, experimental side, both Air Doll and Distance are worth a try. To finish he made a complete UFO with Hana, his one and only try at comedy and it’s totally hilarious (there’s a parody/mockery of the 47 ronins that had me almost wet my pants, lol)

                  • yamakita

I watched Ravine. I really liked the complexity of the story, but had some issues with the structure. I thought the film would have worked better if the story were told in a chronological order first then a time jump to the present in the middle, and then go back and forth from there. I wonder if the storytellers thought keeping us in the dark of the true nature of the relationship would provide a payoff in shock value for the audience, but the movie almost lost me if it weren’t for the befuddling sex scenes.

Some of these Japanese filmmakers really like to brew their stories. I appreciate the care, but it often feels a bit too indulgent. I think some is these stories can be told in a more efficient manner and still be effective.

                    Overall, another great watch.

                    • HyperMoot .

I watched it some time ago so I don’t exactly remember but you’re probably right. “Some of these Japanese filmmakers really like to brew their stories. I appreciate the care, but it often feels a bit too indulgent” true again but more often than not that gives those films some artsy side I like and it makes such a change compared with the logic or rationale of directing as it is in the West.

… Why is Bojack Horseman’s abortion parody song such a lowkey bop? rofl

But “abortion parody” though. The comments section should be a mess.

What..is..this? I don’t want to know. Too tasteless (not you, the video)

Let’s talk about killing some sperms.

    • The Dark Dudette

Hullo, beautiful people. How are you doing?

What is the most shocking celebrity rumour you heard or read about?
[You could talk about famous ppl from your own native country/ies]

It doesn’t matter how true or baseless it is, as long as it happens to be something that made you go ‘wtf’ or left you in splits.

(I know a couple, but they might turn your stomach)

How are you? How’s the weather out there?

          • AoZora

            Great! How are you doing?

A day of sunny spells and scattered showers.. Getting headache due to this weather change..

            • The Dark Dudette

I feel like the country was drowning a month ago. These 2 days have been hot. Everybody around me is melting or vapourising. I’ll remember 2017 for the unpredictable weather patterns.

Flipkart and Amazon sales coming up! You planning to buy anything?

              • AoZora

No shopping for me as of now…got to make a big purchase ….

                • The Dark Dudette

I ordered an ipod from Flipkart last year. And when I opened the package, I found pebbles instead. The worst (amusing) online shopping experience I ever had.

                  • AoZora

                    OMG.. that’s terrible… Did u raise a complaint?

                    • The Dark Dudette

It was a Cash-On-Delivery package. I wasn’t angry or anything. But I didn’t want to react, lest somebody said I was being an angry , loud foreigner. I walked back, the very next day, to the suicide point where the delivery guy stood handing out deliveries, and tried to explain it to him as respectfully I could in Hindi. He humbly accepted the package and I never heard of it ever again. I found out later that such thefts are common. That people were buying phones and getting bricks instead. Well…

                      • AoZora

ok.. you got the refund ?

                      • The Dark Dudette

I never paid. I ordered it in the ‘Cash on Delivery’ mode. So, it was all good. I just found an article that said that flipkart was looking to roll out an anti-theft packaging system this month. Curious to see how it turns out because their packaging is just as fugly as it is easily stealable.

So one question here. My hair is red. And recently, some guy called me ‘khooni’ (because red) and it became kind of a popular joke. I didn’t take an offense to it , because it seemed harmless. But some girls came up to me and told me that it was rude and racist, and I should’ve got back at him and I dunno. Does it really sound that bad to you? It’s a bad joke but not offensive?

                      • AoZora

‘Khooni’ means killer… I would have taken offense.. But again it depends on the person who said.. If it was out of jest and if it’s coming from a known person or a friend, then I may let it go for once.. If it becomes trend, I don’t think I can take it…

I am not sure if it’s racist..

                      • The Dark Dudette

Ah. Okay. I’m going to keep it. Reminds me of this book by Bond called Susanna’s Seven Husbands. The Bollywood adaption was called Saat “Khoon” Maaf. Since Susanna sounds like my own name, I’m gonna own this.

                        I’m a murderer , you guys.

                      • AoZora

As you wish :) BTW, in saith Khoon many she murders 6 husband and who is the 7th husband? , I didn’t get that..

                      • Khooni

Naseeruddin Shah’s son. The boy who idolized her since he was a kid?

                      • AoZora

But, she never marries him in the movie.. Though She is more honest to him than any of her husbands. That kid gets married by the time he meets her at the end… Not sure whom they refer to as 7th husband..

                      • Khooni

She forgave the kid because she liked him and he was pure(?). There was some philosophical mumbo jumbo that completely escaped me to be honest. I know she was talking about her own seven deadly sins (taken from Christianity) but the ending was super confusing.

                      • AoZora

But she never married seven people… So it confuses me.. Which seven husbands she was talking about…. She marries six times and then becomes a nun.. Only that kid knows her true story… Anyways, I have spent enough brain on that… Probably the director wants us to be more confused..

                      • Khooni

I didn’t really like that movie. It was so overhyped. I think an actual actor would have done it justice. PC, as gorgeous as she is, is no actor. And Vishal, as good as he was with his Shakespeare adaptations, made the movie too confusing while trying to be over-smart with the way he handled the screenplay.

                        Aish looking gorgeous as always:

                        https://cdn.pinkvilla.com/files/styles/contentpreview/public/002-Aishwarya-Rai-Bachchan-Grazia.jpg

How beautiful is she??? Kill me!!

                      • AoZora

I think PC was decent in Saath Khoon Maaf… She has that husky and sexy voice which suits her character…. Cant say the same thing about the director… A more clarity in story would have been better..🙂

Ash is gorgeous and can dance well, but something lacking in dialogue delivery.. I find her voice more shaky than steady… She was see-sawing between hysteria and over-wroughtness in Jazbaa… Vidya Balan has better hold on dialogue delivery than many actresses..🙂 Though I am not sure she is doing right wrt choice of roles…

                      • Khooni

I never thought I’d find somebody who’d acknowledge her dance skills. Every person I hear talk about Aish calls her a ‘weak dancer’. But she is one of my favs :( Ash kills both at western style

                        As well as traditional dancing.

I like her much better than Madhuri, who, to me, is one-note and uninteresting. As gorgeous as Ash is, she is very boring. I watched her in Bride and Prejudice, and I couldn’t believe a dull woman like her was cast as Lizzy Bennet, one of the wittiest women in English literature.

                      • AoZora

You must try watcher Pink Panther where Ash had a part… One of the dullest performance by her….

      • hasawa

Mackenyu being the father of a 4 y.o kid.. At the time he was a 14 yo CHILD himself which makes the sexual intercourse he had with the woman statutory rape. The fact that this predator managed to get away with it and that Mackenyu’s parent didn’t bother to drag her rapist ass to court fucks me up up until this day…

        • The Dark Dudette

Wait a min. I don’t understand. So a woman can’t rape a child according to the Japanese law?

          • AoZora

Yes, the case was dismissed saying it was consensual..

            The details are here —

            http://aramajapan.com/aramaexclusive/featured/is-19-year-old-mackenyu-a-father-of-a-5-year-old/61549/

            • The Dark Dudette

I don’t understand the Japanese media. I wish the tabloids had treated it as the crime it was, rather than a piece of gossip.

I still remember how vile it was to the AV actress that screwed around with Arashi and later took her own life.

              • AoZora

Yes,there is no open communication in Japanese society, that leads to lot of rumors and gossips and no one comes forward to clarify… Hence media spices it up and the affected people will be driven to edge…

Looking or acting harmonious is important to Japanese and all the talent agencies try to put lid on anyone who tries to speak to media on his/her own..

                • The Dark Dudette

Idk if you’ve heard of him but there is this Japanese man called Issei Sagawa who is a celebrity cannibal. He murdered and then ate (the buttocks of) a Dutch woman during his years as an art student(?) in Europe. Was declared mentally unfit to stand for a trial and then went on to become an instant celeb in Japan with spots on cooking shows, talk shows yaddi yadda. He even starred in a porno film where he pretends to ‘eat’ the actress.

Uggh. The media thrives on sensationalism but it seems the one in Japan takes it a step further.

                  • yamakita

                  • AoZora

                    • The Dark Dudette

What? You mean an idol dating/getting married is not a good reason to stop supporting them? You monster!

                      • AoZora

Didnt get you… I was talking about media ban on people such as Issei Sagawa…

                      • The Dark Dudette

Sorry. I was trying to be sarcastic

                        #SarcasmFail

                    • hasawa

Because in Japan a man with cannibal fantaisies who kills then eats an innocent girl is somehow less embarassing than a girl in her 20s falling in love and getting a boyfriend and thus disappointing her delulu lolicon fanbase.

                  • hasawa

OMG Yeah, he killed this poor girl in France so we kinda of still remember this story here!
I looked up this guy bio and it’s edifying…
Before coming in France, he already tried to killed a German student in Japan but his rich & influent dad used his connexions to avoid him getting to jail(!!).
After his unfamous cannibal murder on a Netherland student, he went back in Japan and became teacher but soon his identity got revealed and he resorted to use his celebrity to stay afloat. Then, when an affair of serial killer who butchered children arose, he became consultant for the police…. He got diagnosied as being a narcissist and exhibitionnist. He got police checked but never got a serious psychiatric follow up (he only got anti depressant) even though he admitted still having cannibal fantasies(!!!), but not with Western women anymore (????). He indeed made appearance in CMs for meat (along with porns… with one featuring a Netherland actress~in a Netherland inspired set…jfc) and tbh I really wonder what those marketers had in their damn mind for resorting to use a fucking criminal and CANNIBAL to sell meat!!! (I really hope the murdered girl’s family never got to know about it….).
It’s one think this guy got away this his crime, but seeing people willingful to capitalize on a gruesome BLOOD CRIME made by a litteral UNREPENTANT PSYCHOPATH (along with setting him as common celebrity) for money and publicity makes my head swirl to no extent…….

                    • yamakita

Sounds like a real life Hannibal Lector :(

                    • Khooni

“when an affair of serial killer who butchered children arose, he became consultant for the police..”

This reminds me. Back home in Texas, there was this crime in the 1980s of a married woman called Candy who killed the wife, Betty, of her married lover after stabbing her with an axe multiple times. Was never charged. Was let off. Candy , the perpetrator, was the sociable, amiable, bubbly blonde. Betty , a depressed woman suffering from pregnancy blues, had no friends. The police and community might have had their bias, idk.

Candy changed her name, moved to a different state and became a therapist for depressed, married women. 3 cheers for the American Justice System! 3 for the Japanese as well!

So much for so-called 1st World countries!

                  • circe154

His parents were rich and supposedly paid off the legal system to let him come back to Japan instead of getting treatment back in France.
And you forgot to mention he wrote a cookbook.
As messed up as the US can be, at least we have laws that keep you from profiting off your crimes and all the attention whoring OJ did got nipped in the bud before it got published/aired.

                    • Khooni

Yes. It makes our reality TV look like a Bible belt paradise in comparison. This frame of reference makes we relish the fact that we “only” have attention whores famous for being famous. I’d do with the messy weddings, inflated lips, teen moms, vapid housewives and disillusioned youth.

Always wondered : how far can money take you? Got my answer.

                • hasawa

                  You nailed it.
While Japanese society is unanimously looked up for being so respectuful and formal and often praised as an “ideal society”, I tend to think this narrative a bit biaised because this is because of these very same social behaviours that such scandalous and immoral phenomenons are swept under the rug under the guise of “keeping the face” and “not creating trouble”. Westerners may be more brash and than Japanese people, at least we are more honest/straightforward and don’t back away from calling people out on their bullshit. For having worked with Japanese people myself, I can tell you that on the long run this whole attitude of not criticizing your work in front of you (to not “offend”) (and yet talk shit behing your back) utterly unbearable – especially when you’re there to learn -which is often through making mistakes- and that nobody dares to mention what’s you’re not doing right…
No wonder why stuff like pedo-pronographia benefits from such a complacent tolerance there : better not hurting the felings of those disgusting creepy assh*les capitalizing on the exploitation of children sexualization, right…?

                  • AoZora

You are 100% right… That’s why do horrifying sexual abuse goes without being caught.. Even the parents if young boys don’t care to take necessary action… One guy Yuki Kumagai broke a glass bottle on the back of a minor and his mother never reported to police…

                    • yamakita

I think we are witnessing this implosion now with voices of reason and asking tough questions being hushed to make ways for the ultra sensitive and the ultra ridiculous.

                  • yamakita

I agree how passive aggressive some Japanese can be. I’ve experienced plenty of this “talking behind your back” when they don’t expect you to understand what you are saying.

I’m not sure the Western front has been more honest and straight forward, however. There is that expectation of not saying anything if you can’t anything nice. Also, all the PC culture. I think we are all expected to be phony just to get along.

Edit: having trouble tapping my phone this morning! I meant when they don’t expect you understand what THEY are saying.

        Blind Item from PopBitch

Which beloved sci-fi actress has a rather odd daily routine which involves manually wanking (masturbating) off her dog to stop it from becoming too aggressive – seven days a week?

I was never the same after having read this.

They often release blind items of their own. It’s UK based so I’m guessing the celebrity in question could be British.

Whoever they are, they haven’t heard of castration. Somebody tell this poor woman.

For the love of God please don’t let it be someone from Doctor Who .

The most popular guess was Carrey Fisher actually. But considering she’s no more, it’d be in bad taste to put out blind items about a deceased person, wouldn’t it? I still believe the classy Madam here is British. Plus the blind is in the present tense.

Thandie Newton? (Westworld on HBO) Kate Beckinsale? Gillian Anderson?

#2 Apparently, the Jenner sisters want the Kardashian mum dead because they want that money

“These two celebrity sisters were sitting around talking about their mother‘s net worth. Although both of the sisters work and have plenty of money of their own, they calculated that their mother is worth a lot more than they thought she was.
So then they sat around tossing ideas back and forth about how they could knock her off and inherit her money.

At the end, they said that they were just kidding. Maybe.”

This thread brings up a good point: Would you care if you found out your favorite artist had some sort of deviance/perversion? What would be your tolerance level?

I like Woody Allen as a director and find many of his movies enjoyable (and just equally many repetitive). The deal with his adopted daughter, however, really stretched my tolerance mainly because she was young when it started. And honestly, he probably got away with it because he was who he was. Now I still go to his annual movie releases and check out the new films because each one could be his last.

In terms of Japanese celebrities, I always wonder what these hot young actors and actresses have done to get themselves noticed. Or if a 48 member somehow goes from the backdrop to a center… why did they sign up for?

          • The Dark Dudette

I don’t mind Leo. He has never pretended to be somebody he isn’t. In my book, modelizing women half his age and getting chubby on a yacht isn’t remotely as bad as pretending to be happily married while simultaneously wrecking your own family. He works hard, has generally good manners, and doesn’t trot around with a wife and kids to please that old conservative, crowd that votes for that Oscar. As long as everybody involved is okay with the equation , I’m going to keep supporting him while I laugh at all the tabloid stories.

I know your question was about Allen and I have lot to type on that subject. I just had to type this out , just in case somebody thinks I hate DiCaprio or sth.

          • HyperMoot .

“Would you care if you found out your favorite artist had some sort of deviance/perversion? What would be your tolerance level?” old but still relevant debate. Shall I stop watching Roman Polanski’s movies because of what he did to a 13-year-old girl? Shall I burn my copy of “Journey to the End of the Night” because French writer Celine was a crazy anti-semitic dude?

            • Khooni

People only have to do as much as their own moral barometer allows them to. They are the judge of their own conscience. yamakita here, or anybody else for that matter, can’t and aren’t supposed to make any decisions on anyone’s behalf. If people are fine with supporting ,essentially, a man who’s a fugitive, without losing a night’s sleep, more power to them.

I would personally never want a single dollar of mine to go to a Polanski or an Allen

            • hasawa

There’s a line between whatever that is WRITTEN down on paper and literally SODOMIZING a 13 y.o girl…

          • HyperMoot .

I remember people being offended because of the Japanese Navy/Imperial Army flag displayed during Shiina Ringo concerts plus the lyrics of Nippon. But does this count as perversion? Now, imagine I/we learn that Utada Hikaru is a huge fan of Taro Aho, sorry, Aso. Then that would be perv. I won’t change anything for you Yamakita but for my own mental health I just wonder.

            • yamakita

Lol, I’m gonna guess Utada isn’t an Aso fan. Just a guess.

            • yamakita

One of my favorite movie scenes is from Liberty Heights in which Adrien Brody’s character’s little brother dressing up as a Nazi for Halloween. They’re Jewish. That kind of humor to me is priceless.

          • Khooni

Allen is a highly overrated director. What was his last good film? Midnight in Paris?

Anyone who supports Allen or Polanski drops off my list of favourites. Kate Winslet, Cate Banchett, Timberlake,

These people are choosing their own careers over taking a stand on sexual violence , and they have a right to. Sure. But they better own it. They better look in the eyes of their own children and tell themselves that they’d be okay leaving them alone with a man like Woody. I hate how these actors pretend like these accusations are all rumours when both his children have come forward and called him a child molester.

I’m a sick of the lack of a moral compass on the part of all these celebrities. You either stand with victims of sexual perversion or you don’t. There is no middle ground here

            • HyperMoot .

Allen’s movies are utterly boring, especially the ones that made him famous. Recently he has improved and surprised me with movies like Blue Jasmine or Irrational Man. Polanski doesn’t play in the same league, many of his movies are close to the idea of masterpiece. Now to your point “They better look in the eyes of their own children and tell themselves that they’d be okay leaving them alone with a man like Woody.” ??? What makes you think they didn’t tell their kids something like “I worked for him and his company but watch out, the guy is a perv, don’t approach him.”

              • Khooni

At this point, these people just need to be honest with themselves: ” I don’t care what he did. I will work with him and get that acclaim , damnit. His children are not my children ”

What makes you think they didn’t tell their kids something like “I worked for him and his company, the guy is not a perv, approach him all you want. He’ll make you a star.”

And please, sweetheart. Kate has the money and power to say no. She has multiple awards like the Oscar and Golden Globe. She has the name, the visibility yet she recently went out her way to say she doesn’t think Allen is a molester. Let us not trivialize her ability to pick and choose here.

                http://www.vulture.com/2017/09/kate-winslet-clumsily-defends-working-with-woody-allen.html

Hollywood has not run out of directors who don’t have this baggage. Why bother with dealing with it? These people can get their Oscar nominations elsewhere.

                • HyperMoot .

I didn’t know about that Kate Winslet statement. What about the others then, Joachim Phoenix, Emma Stone, Cate Blanchett and many more btw?

                  • Khooni

I’m yet to understand to understand this train of thought that made you write “Nippon bashing”/ “civilised and morally superior the enlightened West is” when the ones being talked about here are all old, white men in Hollywood, which is , the last time I checked, a western industry. Reaching much?

Sure Allen and Polanski have made ‘some’ memorable films.
“But does being an artist trump being a rapist?”

                    https://jezebel.com/5370356/letters-from-hollywood-roman-polanskis-rape-of-child-no-big-thing/

You needn’t be concerned about the criticisms Woody and Polanski are getting on arama, dear. The entire Hollywood fraternity is standing tight behind them. Let’s take a quick glance at a supershort list of all those people that agree.

                    http://www.popcrunch.com/celebrities-support-polanski/

                    Supporters of Polanski:
Allen himself – a man who had naked pics of his underage adopted child and went on to marry her after divorcing her mom.

Harvey Weinstein: long rumoured to have imprisoned children, drugged them and raped them in captivity in a civil lawsuit in 2014. He wasn’t publicly named but nothing is hidden on the internet.

Darren Aronofsky: sociopathic on-set abuser of actors.

That moment when Hollywood gave a standing ovation to Polanski for The Pianist at the Oscars.
When Hollywood did a tribute to Allen at the Oscars 3 years ago.

                • yamakita

Kate Winslet got noticed by playing a homicidal lesbo who plotted and killed her equally young lover friend’s mother. Then she became Rose. I’m gonna guess she is in the art has no moral compass camp.

                • hasawa

“I’m yet to understand to understand this train of thought that made you write “Nippon bashing”/ “civilised and morally superior the enlightened West is” ”
I’m glad I’m not the only one who didn’t understand that reach… lol
Being so dramatic wasn’t needed. I think a fair share of people in Arama have a well functionning brain and won’t start accusing anyone appreciating Allen’s or Polanski’s work as a “creep”~
Criticizing the cultural norms of a country doesn’t mean we feel entitled to consider ours are the best or without flaws, but sometimes, YES, we are allowed to say “I like the way it is in the West better”. I won’t feel sorry for thinking the West is better than Japan when it comes to handling children rights and pedo pornography.
I really don’t get the over defensive stance of some people when we criticize anything from Japan. A bunch of cultures (if not religions “if you see what I mean…..*) get criticized to hell and forth while no one bats an eye, so why not Japan? This country is not above criticism..
Besides, it’s not like Japanese themselves backed away from talking shit about others countries…

                  • Khooni

The west hasn’t had a stellar reputation worldwide for a long time and there is still much left to be desired in this side of the globe. And yes, Americans, in particular, can be very loud, very brash, very arrogant. But this wasn’t the place I was expecting that to be brought up. I mean the old men we are discussing here are what? (White) American and (White) French-Polish not Asian (Japanese).

The OP clearly has a diverse interest in movies, given their weekly recommendations ; and I can respect them for it. But they seem to be thinking that some well-founded and legit criticism of one of their favorite directors is a criticism of their own personal choices and tastes. No no no. I’m pretty sure that’s not where you and I were heading.

                    • HyperMoot .

I have to break my promise on this. First I never said Polanski was one of my faves, he wouldn’t even be in my top 20. Then, I ask you to find where I wrote your criticism (for his horrible behaviour) wasn’t well-founded and legit. Read again please, I called him a criminal which is hardly a compliment. Have a nice day.

                      • Khooni

“Then, I ask you to find where I wrote your criticism (for his horrible behaviour) wasn’t well-founded and legit”

I never said that. Read again.

“…is a criticism of their own personal choices and tastes.”

Implying you are taking this personally. Which is true given by:

“I have to break my promise on this”

You still don’t seem to understand that the ones being criticized here are the directors, not you. Take a chill pill sire/Madame . What’s with the offended Olympics here,?

                      • HyperMoot .

You still don’t seem to understand that I don’t mind at all you or others criticizing those directors.

“”…is a criticism of their own personal choices and tastes.” did I quote that? I don’t see the point

“”I have to break my promise on this” well, sorry, telling Polanski is one my fave directors was a tad far from the truth, there’s no pill needed in order to avoid putting opinions, ideas and thoughts in other people’s minds

Then, so sorry you’re taking it that way, all my reactions or innuendos didn’t refer to you but to some members of the “leave already ” brigade (they know and I know who they are), I’ve had some issues on this site, that’s why. You said “the ones being criticized here are the directors, not you.” that is surely true as far as you’re concerned, for some others, I know what I’m talking about :)

              • yamakita

I thought Small Time Crooks was one of THE funniest movies I had ever seen. Match Point was pretty entertaining, too. But how many young girl falling for ordinary old man movies can anyone make?!

Unfortunately, I believe the entertainment industry worldwide is full of The World of Kanako kind of fucked-up. And many people in powerful positions do use it to satisfy their own perverted appetites. I remember this documentary I watched about Bryan Singer and his fondness for young aspiring actors…Its a world of the end justifying the means and most people don’t have the moral compass to say no, myself included. Every time I watch Shonen Club, I am filled with a decent amount of guilt since I know for sure some of these young performers are being abused, and it doesn’t have to be sexual in nature. I think there are extreme cases–I’m not gonna support any murderer no matter what, but the gray area is different for everyone.

                • HyperMoot .

Your comment is wise and balanced, that’s some relief. I’m out of this discussion now. It feels like reading the comments section of the Japan Times with all the expats experts who wallow into nippon bashing just waiting for the usual bunch of Japanese nationalists to couter rant and then prove their point about how great, civilised and morally superior the enlightened West is. On a personal note, I believe the “leave already” brigade is one step close to calling me a perv or at best a weirdo just because I dared say Polanski had talent, which is sometimes something that occurs with criminals. I’ll let these people clean Japan with their words of wisdom and know-it-all while having a good laugh about the mountain of turd there is in their own shitty countries.

                  • yamakita

“”They better look in the eyes of their own children and tell themselves that they’d be okay leaving them alone with a man like Woody.” ??? What makes you think they didn’t tell their kids something like “I worked for him and his company but watch out, the guy is a perv, don’t approach him.””
Reminds me something : isn’t it Bill Gates, Tim Cook or Steve Jobs who forbade their children using smartphones/tablets..? It’s like all this crap is good enough for us -the pleb- and they have no problem selling to us that shit like it was the best thing for us, but strangely enough, not for them……

          • hasawa

More than the age gap, it’s more the fact that Woody Allen married is own ADOPTIVE CHILD (Soon Yi) that explains his sulfurous aura. For the record, his “relationship” with his then daughter has been busted when have been discovered the “pornographic” (“artistic” according to Allen….) polaroids of Soon Yi, with her legs spreaded, who was only 13 old at the time…. Wooden has also been dragged to court by one his other adoptive child, Dylan (backed by Farrow and one of her brother) who accused him of abusing and raping her as a child…
For those interested, here’s an interesting article from a French anti-pedophilia French site (that I got translated via a crappy lexilogos translation software sorry) about the whole “Creepy /rapist/ Woody Allen vs Mia Farrow & her /abused/ children” drama and it’s definitively worth the read : https://translate.google.com/translate?u=https://pedopolis.com/2016/05/19/woody-allen-et-les-enfants-genealogie-diaporama-et-retrospective/&&hl=fr&ie=UTF-8&sl=fr&tl=en
It’s uterrly distrubing how almost all of their adopted children have either been abused/rapide, deceased prematurely or changed their name… This “family” is all kind of fucked up big f time…
While I totally defend the idea of separating someone’s work and personality, the absolute mediatic complecency some personalities benefits is utterly astounding and frightenning (regading the seriousness of their acts). This is the absolute representation of “double standards” : people be raping left and right and yet have no problem producing, movies, getting awards and shit….but god forbid stealing food to feed your family and they’ll be sending
you straight to jail! This whole reverseal of values feels very
satanic… Polanski comes immediately to mind. After being convicted of raping (via sodomy!) a 13 yo child and hiding like a little bitch in Europe (rumors say he has cancer and he’s begging for being allowed to host American doctors to get cured … NOPE Roman , Satan has long enough waited for you down there~ Your time has come…), people are still defending him because “back then the mores where different” “it was long time ago” ??!! what the ever loving fuck?? … Also, Allen and Polanski talent as producers is hugely debatable so they both loose on both fronts imo. #notoleranceeforthepedos

I’ve always been very curious about KojiHaru’s lifestyle. Either she’s working her ass off or renting her ass off to be able to live luxuriously , while she stays in a 3.5 million yen/month apartment. That photo book money must be raining heavily on her.

Deviance or perversion is fine. Abuse, cruelty, crime… There are a lot of performers and directors whose work I no longer watch or listen to because of their behavior. I don’t care how great it is. They need to be called out on their behavior and they won’t ever change if they keep getting away with it.

Anime post: We’re almost at the end of Summer 2017! What is/are your favourite(s) this season?
      My faves are:
      – BnHA S2: Hero Killer arc was SO great, hopefully they’ll annouce S3 soon
      – Ballroom e Youkoso: It gets better each ep and long necks don’t really bother me anymore lol
      – Re:creators: Not exactly favourite & almost dropped it too many times, but the latter half was pretty entertaining. Looking forward to last ep tonight!

I dropped a lot of shows too… mostly because they’re boring to me (Fate/Apocrypha, Katsugeki/Touken Ranbu, Vatican Kiseki Chousakan, YouJitsu, Shoukoku no Altair), but Made In Abyss is an exception. Here I thought it was going to be an adventure/slice-of-life anime, but it gets darker and darker each episode, and after I skimmed through ep 10 I called it quit orz. Great show though, it’s just not my taste.

      • The Dark Dudette

Have you watched Gamers? It’s more popular than I expected it to be. This anime season has been weak. Both Fate and Jigoku Shoujo had been kinda flat. JS should never have been made.

I’ve only watched Sakura Quest. Dropped Re:Creators, Youjitsu , Princess Principal, Vatican etc etc etc.

Dropped way more than watched. I think I’m finally ageing out of anime.

        • zephyr

Nope, haven’t watched Gamers yet. Just googled it and it doesn’t look like my kind of anime so I’ll prob won’t bother :/. Agreed that this season has been really weak, there’s nothing really stand out & no dark horses at all. Fate/Apocrypha seemed interesting at first but it got more and more boring and I cbb to watch it anymore. YouJitsu is pretty much a school life version of SAO lol

          A bit off topic but I remember we talked about voice actors a few weeks ago right? So I finally completed both seasons of SnK and now I knew what “You traitor…!!” means… ;_;

          • The Dark Dudette

Oh, you remembered?? Come on, sweetheart. Big internet hug here 🙌

Man, I was keeping up with the manga and was so angry at the traitor. Totally a ‘Top 5 Anime Betrayals’ moment there. Uggh.

Yes. I couldn’t be the only one who’s getting a bit exhausted of all the anime that is being released. How many are there in one single season? Like 3 dozen?

And to think the anime industry profits are at an all time high while animators themselves are dying in their sleep! :'(

            • zephyr

Yesss *big internet hugs back* 🙌

The moment they revealed themselves as a traitor was such a shocking moment… I had to pause and processed what was going on & internet screamed at my friend before I could continue watching lol. I’ve just caught up with the manga too (actually read all those chapters within 3 days after I finished the anime😂) and now that I knew their back story, I hate them even more. >:(

Yeah there’s at least around 40~50 anime each season if you count all OVAs/specials. It’s more about quantity than quality nowadays I guess :/ Have you heard about one of Ballroom e Youkoso’s episode director? He passed away because of overwork and it was so sad :( Animators are definitely not appreciated enough by fans & society tbh.

              • The Dark Dudette

                Have you watched Shirobako yet??

Ikr? That reveal cut my heart into pieces. The traitor is so hard to hate at this point in the manga. Arguably the best written and most layered character in the series. That person was responsible for single-handedly decimating most of humanity, yet you feel for them because that character clearly meant no real harm and had to be brainwashed as a kid to do it. Ughh. I read the series like a year before the anime dropped and was shocked to see how big it got because the art in the manga was so damn fugly and the plot looked so convoluted he he

“He passed away because of overwork and it was so sad ”
That is so sad. People were so pissed that SnK2 had a dozen episodes not 26. With animators dying left, right, centre of overwork that’s hardly shocking. The team working on it had 30 people! 30!

Yeah. The anime industry is making more money than ever but it’s clearly not reaching the people who deserve it. Studios need to stop pandering to otakus and merchandising , and focus on making a few great anime rather than too many forgettable ones. It’s impossible to keep up with these many anime each season.

People still line up at cons asking why we don’t have more Gangsta? No money duh.

      • Himi Tsu

        This season, I love :
        – Isekai Shokudou
        – Isekai wa Smartphone to Tomo ni. (But you MUST watch this as a SoL)
        – Keppeki Danshi! Aoyama-kun (In the style of Saiki and Sakamoto)
        – New Game!! (Because I absolutely loved the first season ^^)
        – Princess Principal
        – Tsurezure Children
        – Youkai Apartment no Yuuga na Nichijou

Made in Abyss is obviously pretty good too :) But I must admit I had a hard time with episode 10 :'( Kakegurui is also pretty much unique.

Obviously from my favorite are all same style XD More or less SoL.

        • zephyr

Ohh I don’t even know half of your list lol. Tsurezure Children looks interesting! I might give it a try soon.

Same @ Made in Abyss ep 10 :( I actually wanted to continue but people said it’s gonna get even worse from there so Idk… For Kakegurui I already read the manga so I didn’t bother the show. Love the manga though! It’s unique indeed, we rarely see a protagonist being this ‘obsessed’ with gambling like Yumeko. Might pick the anime up after a few years.

          • Himi Tsu

Yeah, Tsurezure Children is really lovely ! And it’s short episodes :) (I would even say that it’s too bad it’s short!) For sure it’ll bring you a smile.

OMG will it go worst ? I dunno what I should do then :'( I’ll give episode 11 a try and choose from there I guess?

I see ! :D Yeah that’s so rare such crazy characters! I mean almost all of them o.o The gun girl was .. o__O

        • PigeonPop

Isekai wa Smartphone to Tomo ni is ironically brilliant. The so-bad-it’s-good show of the season, if not the entire year.

          • Himi Tsu

            Yeah :)

I personally find it pretty funny how everything he’s doing and solve seems so easy X’D Like what’s your problem? Oh wait I have THAT special power that will solve it. Talk about being over-skilled ^^

      • Maknae

I started this season watching like 6 titles but now it’s pretty much just Made in Abyss. It was a really weak season. Fall 2017 is really promising though, there are like 10 new animes going to air on my plan to watch list.

        • zephyr

Yup same, aside from BnHA and Ballroom I didn’t really have anything to look forward to each week. Ah well at least it’s almost over now!

Yesss I’m excited for Fall 2017! I’ve been looking forward to the new season of Kekkai Sensen and Gintama. Houseki no Kuni, Inuyashiki, Kino no Tabi looks interesting too. Hopefully there are more gems than this past season.

      • AkaneHaga

for me Tsuki ga Kirei is kirei for me, linear plot w/o twist i really enjoy that and now i love Gamer!

and if for manga i’ll choose Rurouni Kenshin Hokkaido Arc Prologue: The Criminal Ashitaro
        waiting ch 2

and HXH that author skill is unbelieveble, it’s art beyond any human can imagine
even only 10 ch it’s a paradise for me
        enjoying every blue dot here

      • PigeonPop

Not too surprised with Abyss being a bit of a runway favorite this season. I’m quite happy to see that I’m not the only one watching Sakura Quest here–both this and the “other Sakura” (Sagrada Reset) are a little more sophisticated in the script department–particularly in the dialogue. But then again, SQ is a P.A. Works show so that’s not too surprising.

Kyokai no Rinne continues to be underwatched.

I poked fun at Nanamaru Sanbatsu several weeks ago for Umika Kawashima’s poor voice acting. She’s still not that great, but the show itself is very, very solid.

Pokemon Sun & Moon continues to the best anime that primarily targets kids. The nostalgia-pandering is handled better than Dragon Ball or Appmon/Digimon, and it delivers in sakuga (animation quality) moments week after week. It isn’t trying to be edgy, and it doesn’t need to.

    • are you guys into the flat Earth theory?
i have bad news for you.

        ?????

        • just look at the pictures and laugh as the flat Earth getting spherical. lol

        that first song…

    • guest

How come Arama doesn’t have to moderate guest comments while poor MaiKaku has to approve each one, because the settings say that “pre-moderation is always enabled for guest comments”?
      What is your secret, Arama?

      • yamakita

Arama isn’t perfect, but I do appreciate its hands-off approach. Sure, some of us like to say inflammatory things at times (I’m looking at you, yamakita), but I think most people know not to take this type of things seriously here.

If a blog just wants people to agree whatever it puts out, it should keep it private and make it invitation only.

        • guest

In case my comment was confusing, I’m just saying that apparently there’s no setting in Minuskakugo’s disqus to switch the moderation off. So I’m wondering how is Arama doing it? Do they have a paid account or something? Or do the newer disqus accounts have different rules, because iirc when Minuskakugo changed owners the previous disqus was deleted and new Mod had to make a new one? They weren’t moderated before.
It sucks that MaiKaku has to spend time on doing this (which I really appreciate btw).

          • yamakita

Ahh. I did misunderstand. I would think the setting was intentional. Kotaku also wants to approve every single comment. Not sure how anyone has the time to (micro)manage like that. I want that job.

    • PigeonPop

First it was Kiki, now it’s Heidi, Girl of the Alps in #2 of the Cup Noodle “Ao Haru Kayo” CM series that paints classic favorites in the tired seishun-romance palette. Not a fan. Also, Peter was voiced by Kamiya here to no one’s surpise.

    • eplizo

So, Osamu Mukai has just fallen off the face of the planet, huh?

      • ennie

In what way? He was a lead in Akira to Akira this season.

        • eplizo

By that, I mean he doesn’t have as much hype as he used to. He was almost at the top lol. It’s a shame cause he was one of my faves too, so I was thinking about how his popularity has waned yesterday.

          • WD79

            Maybe because he got married.

          • Bell

It’s the life cycle of actors. When they are young and poorly paid, they are all over the place because they need the money and the exposure. As they become established, they get pickier about their roles and show up less in gossip. He’s probably relieved to not be in the middle of the hype machine anymore.

            • yamakita

Is that what it is? I just thought it was a case of diminishing returns since the fans are so fickle.

    • yamakita

I don’t think this has been touched on much here, but what is your favorite Japanese magazine? Mine is of the hairstyle variety since I am always having a bad hair day. For a couple of years I was very into Kera and would try to buy the issues. But the fashion didn’t change much in them. Now I have different priorities so I do browsing mostly since they get expensive.

      • yamakita

I also meant to mention that what I appreciate most about Japanese magazines is definitely the photography. It doesn’t matter what it is, the photography is almost always top notch.

      • circe154

It was Zipper. Its so hard to find Japanese magazines, never mind new ones; and the old ones are dropping like flies.

      • hasawa

I’ve been into TUNE for some time (a male streetstyle magazine) but it was too expensive (I don’t like online reading) so I kinda gave up on it. Still the best streetstyle magazine though : men’s fashion tend to be more ‘organic’ and less repetitive and try hard than what Japanese female streetstyle has become.
Larme is interesting; not my style (this whole sweet/pale kei is getting old) but the overall edition and photography are top notch.
I’ve read JILLE for a while bc my favorite Japanese it-girl, Ikumi, was modelling in it (she’s at Mini now, so maybe I should take a look).
So-En is very good. Modern, clean edition and interesting articles. Probably my favorite one!

      • yacchaitai

i mostly check scawaii for own fashion inspo

        • yamakita

I had a phase when I would buy TV guides cuz they were cheaper by comparison and I got see what J-TV programs I wasn’t getting 😬

    • I always miss Open Post. ):

    • HyperMoot .

if you like post rock, dark ambient, neo classical here’s the new catalogue from Ricco Label (Anoice, Films, Cru, Sontag etc)

      https://riccolabel.bandcamp.com/album/ricco-label-music-catalog-2017

great studio session from Anoice, the track builds up from 3’42”, it’s probably my fave instrumental piece ever: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Irr4cDEmI8U

    • AoZora

Anyone watched Ikuta Toma’s Close-Knit movie? .. I think it was good..

      • yamakita

Thanks for the tip to look for it!! I thought it was good, but not great. I get the point of trying to show how flawed the “real” women can be when a non-traditional one could be anyone’s ideal if it weren’t for a “mistake” from God. Still, the storytellers can’t get past their own preconceived notions what make a “woman” and are viewing the subject with a traditional lens. Still, this is a good step toward challenging the audience to think about their own prejudices. I’m glad I watched it.

        • ennie

What would you say the notions of what a woman are in the movie? Just curious.

          • yamakita

It seems to be suggesting that you’re a good woman if you’re a good homemaker.

            • ennie

I wouldn’t say the secondary/B plot homemaker mother is a good woman, ha…

      • ennie

I thought it was alright. I think it was sensitive and normalizing without being too preachy. It was nice that Rinko wasn’t this bombastic diva that many transgender characters are portrayed as in Japanese shows. I don’t have much to compare it to but it did remind me a little of the Korean film Lady Daddy. (Terrible English title for a film, an okay movie but uses more humor in its plot.) The B plot was a little pushed off at the end but was nice to have as well.
