    • Question of the week: Is there anyone you look at in Japanese entertainment and think, “They’re probably a thot…”?

      • The Dark Dudette

The better question would be : Is there anyone you look at in Japanese entertainment and think, “They’re probably NOT a thot…”?

        • AoZora

Mizushima Hiro. I find him a gentle and caring father and husband.. Have seen a lot of pics of him baby sitting his daughter while Ayaka is performing on TV or concerts.. He doesn’t seem to be having any scandals…

          • The Dark Dudette

Keita Tachibana and Aya Matsuura have had a solid long-term relationship.

Maeda Atsuko seems like she really cares about royalty looking at how she dumped her former beau’s ass for cheating.

I ran out of the nice ones too soon.

The biggest manwhore out there is Watanabe Ken for cheating on his wife who was battling breast cancer 🙅

          • ennie

Out of the blue I was looking him up last night wondering what he was up to. I did not know he was on the American show Girls. Bad show, but he is still a good person.

        • Ges

Inoue Mao, Nakama Yukie, Tao Tsuchiya, Haru, Anne Watanabe & her husband Dekkun, Horikitta Maki, Aiba, Kazama Shunsuke,

          • Puppy Power!!!

Arashi Aiba? Huhhh? Maki basically gave up her life to marry an ogre

          • The Dark Dudette

I’ll get back to you if any of them has an affair, yo :p

            • ennie

Nakama Yukie’s husband cheated, she should find someone better.

              • The Dark Dudette

                Good grief. That’s terrible.
Poor girl has had to deal with lesbian rumours before. (I don’t mean this as an offence to LGBT minorities, more power to you)

It’s just that people might speculate if her husband was her beard or something?

        • angel223_

          Kenichi Matsuyama!

        • HyperMoot .

does Taro Aso count as entertainment? coz he’s probably not, man or woman who would date that?

          • The Dark Dudette

Works just fine. Politics is a genre of entertainment in my book :p

        • yamakita

Honestly, there is probably none. The more innocent the image the more opposite they are prolly in private. The entertainment industry is historically a cesspool/front for a form of prostitution. If you want fame, you’re prolly gonna have to sell yourself a little, one way or another.

          • The Dark Dudette

The Music Producer had some beautiful words explaining why he doesn’t sign female rappers

“You know, I never did it because I always thought, like, I would end up f–king the female rapper and f–king the business up. I’m so focused on my business. I gotta be honest with you… She’s lookin’ good, I’m spending so much money on her photo shoots—I gotta f–k a couple times.”

He thinks if he is spending money on a starlet, she owes him sex. I bet that’s how the brain cells of industry big wigs work. Anything that’s f-kable needs to be f-kd. If someone refuses, there are other young girls and boys down the line who’d sell their buttholes to grab a chance at fame.

      • yamakita

        What’s a thot….?

        • The Dark Dudette

          That Ho (slut) Over There.

Is there really any other way for them to exist in Japan though?

        lowkey Kiko Mizuhara… 👀

      • Jasmine Maris

Kiko Mizuhara, Nana Komatsu (G dragon’s alleged past gfs) and Kawaguchi Haruna (still can’t believe she like to grope Chiba Yudai)

      • Guest

        Kiko

      • AoZora

Aoi Yuu(that has nothing to do with her acting talent though)

        • HyperMoot .

:-0 what makes you think that? Just curious though. The countless rumours about her private life or something from her looks? My Grandma thinks she looks like the perfect bride, lol

          • Ennie

She has dated a lot of guys.

            • HyperMoot .

dated? What do you call a girl who sleeps with a lot of guys then? Optional inquiry, what do you call a guy who dates or sleeps with a lot of girls?

              • Puppy Power!!!

                The guy – stud
                The girl – slut

        ??

    • The Dark Dudette

Singers or actors you wished you saw or heard more of? Could be mainstream/indie , not limited to Japan.

      • AoZora

Singer Hariharan from India,.. I am hardly seen any songs coming from him. He has golden voice though..

        • The Dark Dudette

I always thought Karthik sounded remarkably like him.

Still makes me tear up. From a time when Rahman wasn’t making bad songs :p

Seems like Sony, Shaan and KK have disappeared too

          • AoZora

The music companies like T-Series,Universal etc are responsible for their disappearance. Until a few years ago,all the singers would get royalty for their songs but now they just get one time payments. Hence many establishes singers like Sonu Nigam,Shaan,KK Shreya Ghoshal have reduced singing in Hindi movies.. They now look forward to other language industries… Shreya and Sonu now sing a lot of marathi, kannada, tamil, telugu songs.. I am not sure of others…

Here is what singer Alisha Chinai has to say about the current music scene in bollywood –
            https://skjbollywoodnews.com/alisha-chinai-i-havent-remix-kate-nahin-kat-te-i-dont-want-hear/

      • The Dark Dudette

        I’ll start with me.

        SINGERS :
Aaliyah , who tragically perished in an air crash in her early 20s. She was on her way to be a legend. Her voice was sampled in this Chris Brown song, that I love. Heartbreaking.

It seems many young songstresses have tried to emulate her voice and career , with very limited success. Sevyn is great , nonetheless.

I always wonder what greatness would’ve come out of Aaliyah’s career , had she still been alive.

I really really love this cover.

This song helped me through some difficult times as a teen when I was going through some severe identity issues , being the mixed race kid that I was. I heard it on loop for several week and did some fair share of pillow-crying. Ryan doesn’t sing anymore :( . I wish he did. My favourite voice in the entire universe.

Actors: the male lead actor in Switch Girl. He does have a lot of work beyond SG but they’re not the kind of projects I’d pay much to. He is like a mix of Yamapi + Hiro Mizushima. I like his vocal tone.

Ayesha Kapur in Hindi flick ‘Black’, whose performance as the younger Michelle, a deaf and blind girl, was far superior to Rani’s older version.

        Alan Rickman because Alan Rickman

Whoever played Michael in Jane the Virgin . I hope his career pans our well. #TeamMichael

        • AoZora

Child actors hardly enjoy longevity in India(especially in bollywood) though.. They somehow get lost and when they try comeback, their movies dont have much impact .. Eg, Sana Saeed( Kuch Kuch Hota Hai),Shweta Basu Prasad(Makadee),,of course Ayesha Kapur in Black,Dharsheel Safary(taare zameen par),.. The production houses which launch them should mentor them for few years till they can work on their own.. Since there is no Talent agency like concept in India, many child-artist find it hard to get projects and dont get choices wrt their career…

          • The Dark Dudette

Look at the positive side of it though . Of all the entertainment side of things I follow, BW is the only flourishing film/music industry where pedophilia and sexualization of children is not a thing. All the stars look and behave like grown ass adults who actually eat.

I also noticed that the Bollywood fandom is the least receptive or welcoming of child actors or baby faced girls. I think someonev like Aalia Bhatt would’ve been a goddess in Japan and S.Korea but people find her face difficult to find attractive in here. ‘Toddler playing fancy dress in Mama’s closet’ is what I hear very often

            • AoZora

True! Thank God there are no such Talent agencies and Idol culture in India… Many actors are on their own and PR agencies etc only provide service and do not take control of their lives..

              • The Dark Dudette

Yeah. When I look at the way agencies like to control the lives of their talents in East Asia , I almost feel grateful that I come from two cultures that have pretentious stars running their own teams than the other way around. I’d rather have my stars live their lives and go on vacations and make me jelly over their lifestyles than get bossed around by old men.

                • AoZora

These talent agencies treat the artists as some salary men and hence the talents have to censor every word they speak, thus stopping them acting or behaving or speaking like an adult. Its like somebody is already there up who can scold you at any point of time even if your are 40 yrs,50 yrs or so..

Looking at the way KimuTaku is made to look miserable now,I wonder how would he fare in my country considering he enjoyed such a glorious career over there so such a long time..
Those forced apologies due to SMAP, then reports of he acting desperate to claim his popularity back, make him look weak and meekly,,

I dont think Salman Khan,Aamir Khan or Suriya would ever receive such a treatment from Media and Fans …

                  PS: Sorry for my rant..

                  • The Dark Dudette

Ek baar Salman ne commitment kar di, to woh khud ki bhi nahi sunta

Bombay High Court ya Supreme Court ki bhi nahi

                    • AoZora

                      lol…

            • Sarina

Even I’m a baby-faced girl, but I still found it hard to believe that Shahid Kapoor’s character in Udta Punjab would be instantly attracted to her lol. Like bro, really? Speaking of which, she is really talented for her age.

              • The Dark Dudette

There’s nothing wrong with being baby faced, I guess. Alia straight out looks like a pre-teen.

I don’t really find her all that talented? When SRK was promoting Dear Zindagi with her, he talked about how her acting lacked ‘thehrav’, probably hinting that she simply recites / throws out whatever she’s memorized like a parrot. She flares her nostrils and twitches her eyebrows too much for my liking.

Kitne desi hain yahan pe?? :p
                AramaIndia?

                • Sarina

Haha. Well, compared to some other actresses, she’s watchable to me. I’m sure she’ll get better.

Lmao, I’m surprised there’s so many other Indians who are interested in J-entertainment.

                  • The Dark Dudette

140 crore ki aabaadi hai desi logon ki. Har choti cheez ke liye line lag jaati hai :p

      • there’s A LOT. but I can only think of one atm. It’s AYA, she did the ending song for anime Chevalier D’eon and I loved it to bits. Shame she went MIA, haven’t been able to find her new stuffs.

        • The Dark Dudette

Are you me? I loved this song when the anime first came out!

          • LOL, I lowkey think our music taste is probably similar. There’s a lot of musicians that went MIA and underground, you have to dig so deep on Japanese google to find them, shame :/

            • The Dark Dudette

Ikr? It’s such a shame that I always have to ‘accidentally’ find some gems like these because Japanese cos. won’t upload anything on YT :(

        • AoZora

          The song is good..:)

I don’t listen to Korean music much but i accidentally came across this indie gem and it’s still beautiful no matter how many times I listen to it <3

        • The Dark Dudette

          That’s so nice 😊😊☺
I remember watching Asia Music Network where they featured indie artists from all over Asia and the Korean ones were always so smooth and mellow. Too bad I never found any of them on YT😣

    • Umi

Favorite Johnny’s releases of the year? Kanjani’s album and V6’s album are both really amazing, different but both refreshing, I can’t choose which I prefer. XD

      • yamakita

I really liked Sexy Zone’s Rock Tha Town and Johnny West’s Ai Ai Ai. Favorite group is HiHi Jet/Tokyo B Shonen.

          This. Absolutely no doubt.

      • NicoNico

V6’s album is amazing. Songs like Get Naked and DOMINO are too short. :/

        • Guest

          I don’t like Get Naked

        • yeesssss

          they’re masterpieces imo

Question : Why movies at the Japanese box office have been a disaster so far (year 2017). I am talking about all the big movies on which I had kept hope ,but they didn’t deliver at the box office? Have the live-adaptations reached a saturation point?. Or the stories have become too repetitive ? I think Japan needs new ideas and of course better management of an actor’s career..

      • The Dark Dudette

This has been a pretty shit year for Bollywood too.

Hollywood hasn’t had too many billion dollar films either . Not a good year for films, apparently.

        How is Chinese cinema faring?

        • AoZora

          Not sure of Chinese BO..

          • The Dark Dudette
            • AoZora

The article was a good one….

I have stopped watched SRK’s movies long ago .. His last few releases were soo bad that I wonder, whatsup in his mind ..
Chennai Express,Ra-One,Dilwale,Raees,Happy New Year.. All these movies were disappointment for me… He should start enacting roles that suit his age and not prolong his career with poor scripts and gimmicks from his old hit movies…

when he has the whole production house that he controls,he can definitely work towards having better scripts than use his old movie’s references and his over-enthusiastic PR for spreading false news about his and his rival’s movies…

              • The Dark Dudette

His career has been going downhill since KANK.

And given my disdain for cheaters, I can only laugh at him for keeing up that family man image while cheating on his wife behind her back and making movies to justify it.

I don’t. Care. Cheaters go to hell. Or worse, obscurity.

                • AoZora

He look so old and haggard these days… Wrinkles and age is showing up due to smoking habit and poor maintenance of his health… I hope he realizes he cant be Raj or Rahul anymore ..

                  • The Dark Dudette

I didn’t realize how many brown people lived in NYC until Kal Ho Na Ho came out. The lines outside the cinema hall my parents took me to were super long.

I am weirdly obsessed with this song. It’s the most western friendly traditional song. The oxymoron!

The only terminal illness film I ever loved

SRK is a pitiful shadow of his past self now.

        • Matcha

I only watched drama ”General and I”, it is pretty good. Haven’t really been watching that much Chinese movies tough.

              • The Dark Dudette

Matcha is doin’ that pretty well. No complaints though. I commend the god’s work.

          • WD79

This is one of the better ones, but the overall quality of this drama is still very much below such masterpieces like Nirvana In Fire and Eternal Love.

        • Hollywood is just rehash after rehash.

          • The Dark Dudette

Sadly, that’s been the case for
            most of this decade :(

We want another Marvel/Disney adaptation – said no one ever.

            • yamakita

I just realized: is it the result of ComicCon?

              • The Dark Dudette

I can’t really narrow it down to one thing. I am not that much of a nerd. 😶

But social media has really taken nerd interests to new heights. The most popular YouTuber PewDiePie, for example, … the only thing he does is play games, and more often than not, there are about a dozen videos of him just playing ONE title from start to finish, and every single one of the 10 something vids could have views in millions. So it’s safe to say there is an audience willing to spend (waste) so many hours of their lives watching someone else play a game,…. which I don’t get?

Then yes, there are cons and expos of all sizes and magnitudes in every corner of the States. I’ve been to Anime Expo in LA, Anime Boston and Sakura Con which attract tens of thousands of people. If you ever set foot into any of these, you’d think fanatics of Japanese culture were taking over the States, which is not the case. Parking lots die, introverts come out in cosplays, friendships are made, contacts are exchanged, twitter hashtags created, interviews and panels held, videos of these uploaded on the internet which start this cycle of kids watching their favourite Voice actors talking funny things and wanting to follow them to another con.

And now there’s twitch, geek and sundry… Netflix for geeks I guess. Tabletop games, Dungeons and Dragons is now a thing. Best example : Critical Role, which has voice actors as participants

This whole idea of watching VAs role play for 3 hours is a bit insane to me.

The likes of Troy Baker, Laura Bailey are mini-celebrities of their own. VAs haven’t reached seiyuu levels of visibility, but it may be only about time they do.

I noticed that many, not all, con attendees are ‘misfits’, ‘not the popular ones’, have social anxiety, have been/are being bullied at school. So hanging out with fellow attendees with similar interests, that society sees as being peculiar, is a refreshing change of pace for them.

        • I’m not knowledgeable in Chinese Cinemas, but there’s this movie called Wolf Warrior 2 that grossed $600 million so far. Which is kinda fantastic considering the prequel only grossed >$100million if i’m not mistaken.
as for the dramas, they’ve been adapting awfully a lot from web novels, I think all these big movie industries all around the world are in stagnant phase :/

          • The Dark Dudette

I don’t know how true this is but the average Chinese film is raking in hundreds of millions , isn’t it? (Am I wrong?)

Regardless of quality, the Chinese movie industry be number uno sooner than later.

            • I think most of the times, the films do rake in millions but usually it’s around 100 – 200million, just saw an article where wolf warrior has taken the title of highest grossing movie in China. I’m all g for the Chinese to overtake hollywood, hopefully they’ll step up their quality game

              • AoZora

IMAO,Though I can see huge production values/costs in Chinese movie industry, the acting area needs improvement.. The acting of certain actors seems methodical rather than spontaneous.. Also many actresses conform to a certain set beauty standard which makes them look all a like.. Hope they carve some individuality in looks and also voices.. I find some actresses voice similar.. Maybe a dubbing issue or just that they all need to act cute and innocent..

I think the world needs to balanced by multiple entertainment industries.. So,I am all in for Chinese to overtake Hollywood.. Even Japan can try too…

                • Maybe it’s just me, since from all the C-dramas that I’ve watched, I can tell the actresses apart and who’s who, but I understand what you mean with conforming to a certain beauty standard, China has a lot of ethnic minorities, some with really distinct look, which they should’ve focused on, instead of using the same actress, ngl sometimes I get tired of seeing Han actresses again and again.

One ethnic Uyghur actress that I’m really fond of is Dilraba Dilmurat, you should check out her works since I find her acting decent, and definitely not mediocre like angelababy. Zhou Dongyu is really good too, and her face is not like your “typical” Chinese actress.

I think, the thing with Chinese Actors is, they tend to portray the stereotypical male lead. Cool, rich, smug, apathetic, all that tropes that you find on manga, like they could do better since they have the potential but the lack of good quality scripts seem to be the case.

As for the dubbing, it can’t be help, it has to follow the standard Mandarin accent for the whole country to understand, since some of the actress/actor comes from a far away province that has thick dialect. That’s why there isn’t much variety since we tend to hear the same voice actor in many dramas

                  • Puppy Power!!!

                    Are you Chinese???

                  • yamakita

That’s one thing I really hate about the typical Asian romantic storyline: the hierarchy. The plain, simple-minded, poor girl who manages to catch the all- desirable wealthy and popular prince who is a tsundare. She spends the entire story being insecure and worried about losing this good catch while he spends the entire story reminding her that she is lucky enough to breathe the same air. Oooohhh nothing gets my blood boiling more than this farce. The only thing they prove and agree on is the superficiality of their value systems, especially for the girl. Why do people like this nonsense???

                • yamakita

You just pointed out something interesting–the West tends to value individuality while the East likes certain archetypes, hence the similar look. Well, I would prefer a culture that values individuality. I think most everyone would.

In conforming to fixed beauty standards especially females,South Korea,China and to some extent Japan take the lead.. especially the sharp V jawline, Straight thick eyebrows, large eyes, plump lips, pointed chin, very slim/skinny waist and that thick foundation which is many shades fairer than their actual skin color..

India tries to emulate the west when it comes to beauty standards or the actor/star’s life style… I don’t find Indian actors going through drastic face changes and neither are they skinny and they prefer individuality.. I am not trying to praise India here but it is one of the good things that I observed…

                    • yamakita

The modern obsession about weight is really ironic. We can look to starving children and think, okay that’s bad and too skinny. Meanwhile, when I look at many East Asian females, that’s basically the look they are trying to achieve. Marilyn Monroe would be considered fat by today’s standards. At one point in China’s history, obesity was the standard of beauty. Human beings are interesting for sure.

I haven’t been immune to this brainwashing myself. I’m hoping for a camera that doesn’t add 10 lbs.

                    • The Dark Dudette

One of the biggest misconceptions people have about Indians is that they prefer white skinned celebrities and I’m like no….
If that were the case, nobody would find Anushka, Kalki and the likes ‘average looking’ and Deepika, Bipasha or Priyanka stunning.

        • yamakita

I think the problem with Hollywood these days is it believes it can put out crap and the Chinese/foreign market will eat it up. Also, is it a generational issue? What’s old is new again?

          • The Dark Dudette

Then you get film like The Great Wall, a film where China, a gigantic country of a billion needs a white dude, Matt Damon, to save them.

Also, some producer tried to blame the Chinese for the plummeting filmmaking standards in the west today. Hollywood movies suck these day because the Chinese don’t have sophisticated taste or some logic I don’t get.

            • yamakita

I remember Chinese cinema in the days of Gong Li and that director who kept dating his lead actresses. But his kind of filmmaking gets censored by the government…? I do see the Chinese influence as a problem that’s going to get worse because no one wants to be risky anymore and piss off The Man. I read an article recently in which Richard Gere hypothethized that the Chinese was the reason he couldn’t get cast these days because of his advocacy work on Tibet. I mean, I’m no big RG fan or care much about Tibet issue (always thought the Westerners should prolly mind their own business), but the implication here is something to think about if he were right. What can we expect 10 years from now? Will everyone just be a puppet and spewing propaganda? I’m afraid that’s the direction we are heading… This is why political correctness is damaging because what’s right today will be wrong soon enough.

              Sorry about the long rant.

              • The Dark Dudette

If my comment history is any indication, I’m not one to summarize in short sentences. I like words. All kinds of them . Bring them on 🙌
                I enjoy a nice discussion.

Richard Gere is pretty tight with Dalai Lama , whom China hates, but it’s his movie ‘Red Corner’ that served to be the final nail in the coffin. Brad Pitt is banned in China as well thanks to ‘7 Years in Tibet’.

Many Holly stars have flirted with religion and spirituality. Kabbalah and Tibetan Buddhism are the ‘cool’ ones. I doubt if they actually give two hoots about the plight of Tibetans under China. It’s a very multi-layered political issue that is beyond the scope of this thread, but as much as I sympathise with Tibetans for whatever struggles that they’re undergoing in China, I doubt either gentleman has researched enough on the subject, or cares about this issue beyond putting Buddha idols at their homes or using their PR to make themselves look more intellectual than they really are. Hollywood celebs love to jump on any hot issue that’ll give an air of intelligence and depth to their persona. Leo preaches about environmental issues only to hop on to private jets to attend his yatch parties with 20 something’s. Hollywood is also a good reason why feminism is a dirty word in the west.

I’m not suggesting everybody bend backwards and bow down to China. It’s the opposite, actually . But blaming China for the pathetic state of affairs in western movies is unfair. Filmmaker would rather take the money than use their brains to make meaningful movies.

                • yamakita

Sometimes I really believe you are the better long lost twin of mine! Your take on the Hollywood bandwagon is right on. Recall that everyone was adopting the poor Third World children to look like saints? Yeah, I’m waiting for that Korean or J- movie to show that these kids are used for some twisted sexual deviance of these saints. Actually, I might have seen that already.

Your closing comment reminds me of a comment I read from a Chinese peasant who said not to blame the Chinese for the economic woes in the US because we wanted to fill our homes with the junk the Chinese produced. Food for thought.

                  • The Dark Dudette

Dame Angelina Jolie, who popularized the whole act of our Hollywood heroes deigning to adopt children from the so called 3rd world countries was revealed to have played abusive psychological games with children , during the audition process her recent movie, based in Cambodia. The psycho had the world fooled for a decade *shrugs*

The POTUS is a businessman, who is trying to tell Americans that he’ll destroy the economy of those evil Chinese while his own daughter has her clothing line manufactured in China in very dismal conditions and at pathetically low wages for workers with only 5 day leave a year.

This sums up our relationship to China very well. The media loves to demonize , hate them, blame them for the failing economic conditions when the solutions to the many problems that the country suffers from lie inward.

Same for Hollywood as well. China is not resonsibe for the creative drought in ideas.

The Communist Party hates giving their people a chance at using their brains to think about unimportant things like freedom and liberty. Which is why the only films that get a release in China are the ones with very vague ‘good vs evil’ themes, that is ever so present in Marvel movies.

      • Japan really needs to get off of getting all their ideas from anime / manga.

        • HyperMoot .

actually you have quite a few directors who rely on novels, or invent their own plots and storylines, the problem is that financing non anime/manga projects is increasingly difficult. English dubbing used to be very cringe worthy, but it has gotten better. Still, nothing beats the nuanced Japanese voice acting. It’s easy to understand why seiyu are worshipped.

        • The Dark Dudette

I don’t like celebrity seiyuus like Miyano Mamoru. And female seiyuus are almost interchangeable at this point. They all seem to be copying each other. I’d almost always prefers the Japanese pre-lay. But I love the dubbed ones for comedy.

          Ouran
          Hetalia
          Sgt. Frog

          Etcetra

Hated the Attack on Titan dub. But it is the most watched anime in the US now. So….*pats Funimation on the back*

          • PigeonPop

Ah, Mamoru. I do think he has the talent when he chooses to actually show it, but he is definitely the type of popular seiyu who knowingly plays it up and flatters his target audience in both delivery and in personality as of late (thankfully not as bad as Sugita, at least…). I won’t outright fault seiyus that do it, but I personally gravitate towards those who dare to demand some common sense and civility from the fandom. Megumi of course, and Maaya Sakamoto too is another great example. I feel the latter group aren’t as typecasted frequently either as a result.

          • yamakita

Honestly, it’s been a while since I was able to follow any anime whole heartedly. Everything is so repetitive these days. Thank goodness some manga is still interesting.

            • The Dark Dudette

You remember that anime recently about that teenage boy who is half human and the other half of him is an entity that eats humans????

Also that anime about the whiny girl who falls for the stone-hearted but most-popular-boy-in-the-school-who-is-cold-on-the-surface-but-a-kitten-inside ?

              Yeah. I love those two.

              • yamakita

                What’s the second one?

I think I got really turned off after I watched The Occult Academy. I don’t know why I was trying to make sense of it, but it REALLY bothered me the MC had the same hair and outfit her ENTIRE life. Maybe that’s what happens in Japan, but it really got to me, though I watched the whole series.

And every other anime is of the harem genre. It’s like Oh Please. I eventually found every anime to be too formulaic and I could never get passed the first episode.

Now I’m in the J-movie phase, but I have a feeling I’m going to get tired of the dark, depressing, haunting, and feeling hopeless theme soon.

                First category:

                Parasyte
                Tokyo Ghoul
                Attack on Titan

                2nd
                Evry shoujo anime ever

      • PigeonPop

I mainly watch raw streams on NicoNico/Bilibili etc. so I’m not familiar enough with the English dubbing side, sadly. As for Japanese VAs, the depth is so great it’s hard to pick just one; I’ll pick two very unoriginal favorites. Koichi Yamadera for being unmatched in versatility (from the Japanese dubbing of Hollywood blockbusters to Pokemon like Mew). Megumi Hayashibara for her laundry list of great anime songs, industry-defining roles, and personality. Despite the popularity she’s never a pushover to the often-toxic anime otaku community which is frankly remarkable.

        • The Dark Dudette

Could you care to throw some ligjy on how the Japanese react to the dubs of Hollywood/Disney films?

On this reddit thread that I can’t seem to find, there was a comparison betwern how English speaking fans react to dubs of Anime and Japanese fans react to Japanese dubs of Disney/Harry Potter .

It’s almost uncanny to see how similar the reactions are/were. On both sides, there was one faction that seemed convinced that the dub was ruining the awesome foreign product while the other faction called the former a ‘weaboo slash white worshipper ( in the case of Japanese internet)’ for praising the foreign language acting that they couldn’t understand.

While I would invariably choose to watch an anime in Japanese , I always think if I’m losing out on certain nuances or contexts because I am fixating in the subs and don’t know the language at all. I am also not sure if I can be a judge of Japanese voice acting since I’ve seen non English speakers praise the line delivery of Kristen Stewart in the Twilight saga 😓

          • PigeonPop

It’s kind of a case-by-case situation. Sadly, Hollywood dubs have become a very easy recipient of gorioshis that virtually all major releases will have at least one~two young actor/actress and/or popular tarento pop up on the dubbing credits despite the lack of experience and skill. It shows. Satoshi Tsumabuki is for the most part well-respected today but his dubbing of DiCaprio’s Jack in the Titanic is legendary-levels atrocious. It goes without saying that these dubs are routinely trashed.

The subbing scene is also not that amazing due to the near-hegemonic presence of Natusko Toda. She works fast, has the seniority and connections (she’s almost always the old lady next to Hollywood celebs like Tom Cruise when they come to visit) but a living disaster. She too is routinely trashed. Some examples:
            https://www.quora.com/What-are-some-disastrous-translation-mistakes
            https://matome.naver.jp/odai/2134241468633612601 (in Japanese)

Disney (Pixar) is in its own category as their standard for both subs and dubs are much higher. I don’t think you’ll see too many criticisms for either from the Japanese when it comes to Disney releases.

            • The Dark Dudette

Thank you for the detailed response . I love and appreciate your insights into the workings of the industry.

“Parents do the best for their children.”
              That bit was hilarious!

Another question if you don’t mind? What’s up with Miyazaki’s routine shunning of the anime industry as well as seasoned voice actors. He keeps casting screen and stage actors for his films. Is he a pretentious man who thinks he’s too above the very niche that made him famous or does he have legit reasons behind his endless taunts against anime? I have read also read that the acting in his movies tends to be refreshing but inconsistent and weak.

              • PigeonPop

Miyazaki’s part of the old guard who’s wary of the current state of the industry (domestic shortage of younger animators, lack of variety in genre, the VA scene being oversaturated etc.). I don’t recall him ever shunning veteran seiyus but he never cared for the increased prominence of idol-seiyus and the otaku culture surrounding them. He’s anti-moe, and combined with his preference for more natural portrayals meant that he eventually phased seiyus out in favor of actual children to voice his younger characters.

The reason why he did the same for the rest of the cast is ultimately tied to the industry itself. It’s hard to believe today, but animated features right up to the early 90s were not a box office draw for the GP with the sole exception of Doraemon. Kiki was Ghibli’s first true box office hit (Totoro was initially a flop until VHS and merchandise sales kicked in). From them onwards Miyazaki and producer Toshio Suzuki mainly picked screen/stage actors as a shortcut to silence critics who kept using the it’s-just-anime-trash card and appeal to the GP that their works were “safe for public consumption” so to speak. The two never really looked back since then.

I’m fine with the acting in Miyazaki and Takahata Ghibli works as the delivery, while different from the norm in anime, is uniform if that makes sense. You won’t have that situation where an actor or tarento sticks out like a sore thumb in a sea of skilled VAs. The one exception to this is Anno in the Wind Rises…

                • yamakita

That’s funny cuz I find all Miyazaki’s anime the same…

                  • PigeonPop

Aside from the shared motifs (airplanes, mainly female protagonists, morally ambiguous characters etc.) I find Miyazaki to have great range. Very few anime directors can manage to create works that can appeal to primarily kids like Totoro/Ponyo while also doing the same for adults like Porco Rosso/Wind Rises. And he achieves all this without relying on what I call “otaku-appeasing” aesthetics or student seishun settings. Takahata is his only equal in my eyes.

I miss Troy on the new Persona series

      • zephyr

I don’t watch dubbed anime at all, with that said though I’ve played dubbed version of JRPG games so my favourite would probably be Laura Bailey. She’s so great as Rise (from P4) and, IMO, even surpass the Japanese version.

For Japanese VAs, my ultimate fave has always been and will forever be Sakamoto Maaya, but I guess I like her more as a singer not a voice actress tbh. 😂 Others would be Okamoto Nobuhiko (who has one of the most versatile range I’ve ever heard), Kaji Yuuki (I prefer his deeper voice though), and Hayami Saori (her voice acting is just INSANE, I love her).

        • PigeonPop

Maaya is brilliant. And I love how she has one of the most civilized fandoms out there.

          • zephyr

She really is! Her recent role in Re:creators just blew me away. And yup, I’ve been quite a long time fan of her but never really seen any feud in the fandom at all (compared to other seiyuu-singers out there).

        • The Dark Dudette

Okamoto Nobuhiko will forever be Usui Takumi in my heart. High school feels😚 I still remember my amazement at the sudden switch he makes to the delinquent voice in Maid Sama.

I love Kaji Yuki’s voice. He has mastered those polarising love-or-hate characters . Can get repetitive at times but I get the princely vibes about his voice that female seiyuus talk about. He proved himself to be the VA god in the 2nd season of AoT ‘……..traitor!!’. ….if you get my drift .

Maaya has a beautiful singing voice. Her diction and intonation are so good.

          • zephyr

There were several times when I saw Nobu’s name on the credit and I was like ?????HE WAS IN THIS SHOW!?!??! lol

Agreed about Kaji! His voice is easy to recognise, but he definitely has that aura about him. Haven’t watched SnK yet but I kinda get what you mean. :p Plus his singing is pretty good!

Ahh gravity ;_; I pretty much love every Maaya song in her Kanno era tbh. Tune the rainbow, Hemisphere, birds, 23 carats are so good, although my all-time favourite would be The Garden of Everything. Still sad we didn’t get a DVD/BD release of Kanno’s Seatbelts Live. :(

        • Puppy Power!!!

          Anime recommendation please anime god?

          • zephyr

lmao not sure if you ask the right person tbh because I’m far from anime expert let alone god :p Anyway I don’t know what your preference is so I’ll just recommend some of my favourites:

            – Psycho-Pass (2012) One word: masterpiece. I only recommend the first season (Extended Edition) though. S2 sucks and the movie isn’t far from it either
            – Death Parade (2015) Kind of episodic but still unique and interesting. It can be funny and emotional in the same episode
            – Boku no Hero Academia (2016) If you like shounen this might be up your alley. S2 (which is airing rn) has one of the best arcs in the story
            – Mob Psycho 100 (2016) Also shounen, same creator as One Punch Man. I didn’t expect it to be this good tbh, the characters and the way its story progresses is really captivating
            – Akatsuki no Yona (2014) One of the best shoujo I’ve ever come across. It’s like Arslan Senki but a much, much better version of it. The OVAs are as great too
            – Akagami no Shirayukihime (2015) Another shoujo. S1’s pacing is a bit slow but it gets better and more interesting in S2

          • Dalooshe

Check out Made in Abyss this season! The story is reeally interesting and I’m also team Ise Mariya as a VA so I highly recommend this adventure anime!

      • Sarina

I remember going to one of his panels too, he started it off with these creepy ass hentai jokes. Eughhh.

I met Ai Maeda a couple of years ago, she was super sweet!

        • The Dark Dudette

The one I went to, he was handing out CDs all about the holy God and his son and salvation and what not for free to everyone who’d care to want one. I was like…okay. At least he didn’t try to drag our butts to the Church.

Dude is religious, sure. Nothing wrong about that but it’s when he started low-key flirting with all the squeaky fangirls is when I decided to quit.

And anybody who’s gone to cons, be the bigger ones like Expo or Boston or the smaller, obscure ones , would know just how long autograph lines for Vic can be. Crazy.

      • SlyMoonFox

I’ve watched the English dubbed of some Animes but I had to switch to Japanese mainly because I don’t think the voices matches with the characters.
I also watch Anime in Spanish (Mexico). They change some lines and they’re are completely off but it’s mostly jokes so we still get the main important ones. I think it’s funny mostly because I understand the references. Anyways, I enjoy Anime in my language there hasn’t been a time where I thought the voices didn’t match the character so that’s awesome.

These are track and field athletes, right? Japan is the only country I trust with honesty in sports.

Waiting for China, Kenya Jamaica for being busted on their state sponsored doping. Russia had their medicine.

        How mean am I?

        • HyperMoot .

yes, the 4x100m men relay. That was a surprising silver medal. Bolt himself took a moment to congratulate them. None of these guys run below 10″ but their remarkable teamwork sync made the difference to beat the US

          • The Dark Dudette

That’s awesome. They were the surprise 2nd place holders in the Olympics too, right?

I stopped paying attention to athletics when Bolt retired.

            Which happened this week.

He lost the gold to Gatlin, which was so unfair to the honest athlete that is Bolt. Should’ve been awarded the 8 year ban honestly.

        • Puppy Power!!!

WADA will get them. wADA cares about honesty

          • The Dark Dudette

Na. WADA only cares about money.

    • Encha277

Does anybody know if there is a full version of that song by AI & Naomi Watanabe? Been looking, but couldn’t find a definitive answer and the Youtube video is labelled as “Short Version” which would make me think that a long version does or will exist.

      • I think you should be able to find one on bilibili

      • WD79

I thought the song hasn’t even been released officially yet?

There was an article this week about Iwata Takanori being cast in a suspense film, and a few people were saying he was a bad actor; I like to be open minded before judgement so I thought I would see a movie with him in it. I guess I chose poorly, I ended up trying to last through the movie Evergreen Love trying to find any merit or purpose to it and not fall asleep. It was a bad movie. Later in the week I watched the movie Our Little Sister, I enjoyed that. Both movies are slice of life/human drama, but when the acting is not up to par it really shows.

      • yamakita

I really liked his character in Dear Sisters. Most of these idols are by default not great actors/actresses, but occasionally they do okay.

    • gus

in recent interview, Taka said new OOR album is already in the work and it will have heavy influence from RnB.

CAN WE JUST HAVE SOME PUNK-SOUNDING STUFF BACK PLEASEEEEEE AAAAAAAAAAAA

      • WD79

I don’t think anybody here really knows. What scandal has he gotten into?

        • basically he “groped” a girl in nightclub, he was legit so drunk, people had to carry him and he can’t remember shit

      • Matcha

Netizenbuzz has plenty of people talking about it.

      • yamakita

I had to google this. You mean that woman didn’t feel lucky to have been molested by him? How dare she! (Heavy sarcasm).

        • Matcha

Nah, she had a bf and he took it to police and media, I guess they got payed off by SM ent. cuz charges were dropped!

    • WD79

Tsuyoshi cancelled his solo live as well as his appearances at the summer rock festivals.

I know that it’s near to impossible for his hearing to recover fully, but I sincerely hope he’ll get much better.
