    • It’s weird that TWICE ranks so high on Top Artist seeing as how they only places where they are in the top 10 are:

      Twitter: 4
      Youtube: 1
      Streaming: 10

      • i guess it’s also because they’ve been charting well in bb hot 100 for so many months (one reason i can think of)

      • annie

They mention that it’s because of longevity. That along with the categories they’re in make perfect sense for a group that’s been more trendy than a staple in japanese music

TT didn’t rank as high as the songs above it but its charted for a long time

        • But being that high on things that aren’t really sales-related shouldn’t put you that high on a music chart.

          • srqs srqs

Don’t underestimate their achievements in Youtube. TWICE is basically the Koi of Youtube. They got too much points on Youtube due to having two versions of many of their songs.

            • Watching a video on YouTube isn’t the same as actually spending money on a song.

              • srqs srqs

I missed to address your point.
Let’s assume that the top artist chart is derived from Hot 100 chart only.
If my assumption is true, then it’s not shocking to see TWICE on the third spot since TWICE is doing well on the Hot 100.
“But being that high on things that aren’t really sales-related shouldn’t put you that high on a music chart.” It’s normally true. But it does not mean it is impossible to rank high when an artist did not do well on sales. The artist just have to do really really well on non-sales metrics. It’s difficult to pull it off. For example, Piko-Taro failed to get the Top 20 last year. But this year, TWICE did just that.
I think Billboard Japan designed its points system on video streaming views where a hit song on YouTube will do well on Hot 100. I think “PPAP” demonstrated this point. This is also the explanation why TWICE songs did well in Hot 100.
TWICE has many “hit” songs. These songs did not only do well, some of those songs also have two versions. Having two versions make it easier to get two views of the same song. Since TWICE songs do well in the Hot 100, TWICE will also do well in the Top Artist chart.
I don’t know about digital sales, but Billboard Japan changed its points system on physical sales this year. An AKB single can get more than 100K points on its release week last year. This year, only the senkyou single got more than 50K points on its physical release, and it’s less than 60K. This gives a big disadvantage on those relying on physical sales.

    • nothingsover

Yonezu Kenshi’s rise in popularity this year was awesome. Just listened to his new album and really enjoy it. The songs are really varied in style but still flow together nicely. He and Daoko seem to change genres with each song but it’s refreshing.

    • What

Do these charts combine both physical and digital? Equally?

Wow Hoshino Gen and Namie did really well this year.

      • light

It’s both physical and digital, i think they also count streaming etc.

      • Categories they count are Radio Play, Streaming, Downloads, Physical Sales,
        Twitter Buzz and Youtube Views

    • trufax

Bodan Shonen Dan needs to release an original japanese album already

    • eplizo

Shocked Yonezu Kenshi isn’t higher on the artist list tbh. He’s had such a huge year overall either way tho. I’m proud of him lol.

    • Bobson Dugnutt

Interesting to see Keyakizaka above Nogizaka. They seem to be rising.

    • hasawa

Shocked to see OOK’s ‘Ambitions’ higher than Hikki’s ‘Fantôme’ (and basically them charting in a bunch of these charts). WOW.

      • Their album came out this year, while hers came out last year.

    • gus

Suchmos! Wow! Never expected them to appear on this kind of chart.

    • MomoHirai

      Good job Twice~

Hopefully they can be top 20 in at least 7/8 categories next year :) I know people are going to question this chart because Twice is on it though. Hopefully everyone stays resepectful!

    • AoiMe

Everyone predicted smap will top the album chart, but here comes Namie obliterating everything on sight
      And yay twice!
